Monstercraftsman Turbo Charged Xs650

Getting more stuff done. That's our mechanic Jeremy looking on at a job well done.

Doesn't look a lot different since last post, but we swapped out the stems which was a huge project. So now the GXSR front fork has the xs650 stem in it which works right with all the bearings. Also, our final wheel and tire selection is complete. Billy from Monstercraftsman completely disassembled his 16 and 19 from his personal bike and offered it up to use with this turbo bike. He sandblasted everything individually and powder coated the rims, hubs, and spokes, different shades of black and reassembled the wheels. fresh firestones mounted and balanced and wheels trued!

Looking great! Will have to talk to you guys about some bits I'll need for my VV MK4 frame David is making for me now :) (well at least when he finishes the endless stream of parts for you guys!)

Will for sure need the chain tensioner and maybe some footpeg mount plates if you're selling them.

Hi

As somebody else has asked........

What are you going to do about the top motor mount?

These things have been known to break mounts and cases in standard tune without a top mount, with your turbo conversion fitted, you should end up with more HP or torque (no real point in doing otherwise) so the risk of mount fracture should be higher than with a stock motor. The vibrations will be interesting as well with a tuned motor and fewer motor mounts than standard (if you are deleting the top mount)

I've been doing some reading on the top mount issue and there seems to be many who run without. Surely having it is more secure than not, especially with a turbo etc.

I might run a top mount on my Voodoo Vintage frame as the backbone runs much closer to the top of the engine than the Lone Wolf model Monstercraftsman is working with.

Tim,
The problem is the torque tries to rotate engine in frame, the top rear engine mount 'pushes' through top of crankcase.
You're probably aware the engine mounting bolts need to be tightened in a particular sequence, plus checked pretty regular
I've only seen it on one 650 cracked/repaired but several 750 conversions have the problem, particularly if you dump clutch hard (mostly flat trackers which are substantially lighter than stock bike but revved harder and abused more)
At the very least, I would run a torque bar to front or rear, it will be easy to hide it under tank
One other thing that is done, weld a plate over the top of crankcase, boxing in rear mount above gear change drum

Will definitely have to chat with you when I put the 750 motor in my current bike. Want to make sure it doesn't fall apart (at least not before the BUB Speed Trials :))

I think the info is on 650 garage
I was also in touch with Tony Hall several years ago when I was inventing the 'long rod' 800 motor as 533 cranks were getting rare.
Good guy, sad loss to XS community :(

Had the chance today to see this bike and meet John, its builder. They were finishing it at the Tominioum show in Baltimore. The craftsmanship is top notch and the machine is nothing short of wicked. I never asked about the motor mount. I was to enthralled by all the beautiful hand crafted details (the bike is simply amazing) then we got side tracked talking about family. Guy is a real stand up kind of guy. His life story is just as amazing as the bikes he builds. This was def one of the highlights of my weekend.

Ok pencil me in for 2013 :) Wish I coulda been there. Lets make this an annual one.

They mentioned taking to the dyno, and Monstercraftsman makes some cool videos (check their site) so I'm hoping they'll capture it for posterity.

We are going to dyno it enough to blow up at least two engines. After that we'll get serious, turn down the boost and just race people light to light. After that, let her cool down while we get an ice-cream sandwich at the local 7-11... Videos to come as always...

Best quote of the year thus far
