Montreal Manchild with an '81 Honda CB750K

Hey mate yeah the BB order is coming direct, steeling myself for the duty ream. The holding place is a good idea though, I should look into that - there has to be something like that across the border in Vermont. I know there's a limit on how much you can bring back across the border if you only stay a short time, and being on an English passport I always get a going-over coming across the border. Still, it's a good idea - gonna look into it.

Actually did something similar with the Cobra exhaust I bought for my V Star - got that beast shipped to a hotel and then took the wife down to Stowe for a mini break. Saved exactly zero money doing it that way but screw it - wife had a spa and I got a mean set of growlers.

How's the foot holding up? Friend of mine here took a header on the ice this winter and ended up with a broken foot - he's dealing with an infection in there now. Sucks that everything is healing up nice apart from one small spot that just won't play ball. Hope you're on the mend mate

been there on the healing and infection but right now I'm progressing well. off the cane for more than half the day right now. You are allowed 20 bucks if over for less than 48 hours but if 48 hours you can bring 800 CAD tax free X how many people in the car, and 1 24 of beer or 1 40 oz per 18+ year old in PQ, 19+ here. the big savings is you pay QST and PST and that's it if you bring it home for personal use. when a carrier like UPS does it they charge you a clearance fee of 30+ then put tax on the whole total, package and clearance so you get raped. I use the rule of thumb if I can save at least 20 bucks sending it to maine it's worth the 45 min trip, gas is cheaper, milk is cheaper and I can generally save enough on those to make it worth it. Last few times I saved over 300 bucks after still paying the tax on stuff.

Cheers.

also if they did use UPS or Fedex you will get a call. I have learned to tell them it is a gift and they use a lower rate for clearance charges. It still sucks but it's less.

Happy to hear about the foot, onwards and upwards mate. The duties that UPS levy totally suck but fortunately I have a business account with FedEx which makes for slightly less painful shipping.

Question - trying to source a chain for the bike, the size is 530 and I think the current chain has 108 links (need to recheck). I've found a chain with 110 links - are they removable? I don't have the specific tool for the job - can I do this myself?

Check your sprockets for wear before ordering the 530 chain. If you need sprockets, you'll be better off switching to 520 and replacing the sprockets all at once.

I get stuff delivered to Point Roberts when I can't get it in Canada or if it is a lot cheaper in the US. If the item is less than $300.00 they let you go through without bothering to charge duty but even if they do charge you the savings on brokerage fees can be substantial.

Point Roberts is just across the border between BC and Washington.

Try FortNine.ca . Canadian company, Canadian dollars and free shipping over $49 before tax and usually within 2 business days! I've used them a couple times now and they're great! Formerly Canada's Motorcycle, I believe.

Also, they carry chains in 108 link with Master link.

Amen to FortNine Cookie, I've used them loads in the past and actually ended up finding a chain on there yesterday.

I counted the links on my current chain, 106. Although I've also read that the OEM chain should have 108 links. The chain I bought yesterday has 106 links - is that gonna do the job?

Oh, and another question. When I hook up my battery to a trickle charger (the battery is out of the frame - the bike is dismantled), can I hook up the crocodile clips directly to the positive and negative terminals on the battery? Or do I have to hook up an insulated cable to the negative terminal and attach the crocodile clips to that instead?

From what I understand, adding this cable is a safety measure to minimize the chances of any sparks from the positive and negative terminals from igniting any gasses from the battery. Do you all do this (add the cable to the negative terminal) or should I be ok to hook the charger up directly?

I just hook em straight to the battery terminals the spark worry is usually in a boosting situation, never get sparks when I am connecting a charger.

The Honda factory service manual lists the chain as 106 links. Factory drive sprocket a are 18 front and 43 rear; 530 size chain.

Cheers!

Nice one Cookie, appreciate the info. I was looking on another site which had the number at 108. Shoulda known I shoulda looked at the manual

Starting to think about colour schemes for the bike, and like the idea of painting the front brake caliper a gold colour with a black undercoat, then sand the gold back on the edges and raised spots back to black to give it an aged look. If it works then I'll do the same affect on some of the arms on the rear brake drum too. Looked into some VHT caliper paint but it needs curing in an oven at temps of between 200 - 400C.

Wife'll have an aneurism if I use the kitchen oven - anyone got any suggestions for a work around? Maybe a brush-on caliper/engine paint instead (the caliper has a pretty rough surface anyway)? Does brush-on paint cure by itself hard enough to withstand the rigours of the road/brake fluid?

Do you have a toaster oven? I take that out into the garage and bake small parts, there is no residual odor when you bring it back in. Caliper should fit fine.

+1.
You can likely find one cheap at your local thrift shop. That way you have a garage oven!

Also, for those of you doing renovation work: a $5 thrift shop Mixmaster works GREAT for mixing grout or drywall mud!
