Mounting steering damper.

Mounting on the triple tree is cleaner, and some trees have a spot for them, but in some cases you may have clearance issues for the damper mechanism.

I had to mount mine a bit lower, clamping it to the fork tube and then to a downtube on my frame. It was the frame side that was the PITA to figure out a clamp for. I'm still not happy with the oar-lock clamp I got from Princess Auto (yep, row boat).

note to self- weld a damper mount to frame

anyone retrofit a new sport bike damper to an older bike? the ones that mount to the top tripple tree.... ideas?

Think it's ok to just drill a hole on the lower triple tree and bolt it in there?

what bike do you want to mount it on to?..

Many Cb's and xs650 have a brake switch or a junction mounted under the tripple tree.
Depending on where the screw holes are and if you are not using the switch, (ie: going direct from the Master Cylinder to the caliper), then you could probabbly just screw the front of the steering dampner to that hole... of course it all depends on the bike and location of that hole...

just another option to look into...

I've considered it. Doable but requires some fab work and welding and it wouldn't look very vintage. Just don't want to drop $200+ on a used damper to experiment with.

Mine is rigged like this. Yes it's ghetto. I care not.

If you zoom in close you'll see a spot on the lower triple where u have the option to drill it out. I chose not to.

Hey, I used the same setup. Is that a GSXR dampener?

hey dude, i just got a gixxer damper and i am planning to mount it like kiley and brandon did.
there should already be a hole on your triple, if not i doubt there is an issue drilling into it.
as far as mounting to the frame, i will do the same as brandon and kiley except not welded.
i will drill through the downtube, attatch a small piec of pipe that will bolt up to the frame.
the side of said pipe that attatches to the frame will be saddled so that it sits nice and solid.
then on the exposed side, add a flat washer then your damper.
finaly, bolt all the way through to the other side of the downtube, throw on some threadlock and you should be good.
just adjust per your own specs.

I'm going for a vertical mounting on my bikes.
Stationary pivot at the top of the steering neck and a central mount on the lower triple. When centered it's at it's shortest, as the bars turn it lengthens the damper. I think the new Honda big bore motocross bikes are doing that now....at least I think that's where I got the idea....

GSXR damper on CB350 triples. I got mine for $6 on eBay - must be something wrong with them, so many people toss them aside. Only on early CB350 triples will you find the pre-tapped hole to mount. Originally it was there to mount a rotary/friction style damper, as on an old Brit twin. Later CB350s have wider triples, dispensing with the friction damper altogether, but the lug is still in the casting, it's just not drilled or tapped, but should be easy enough to do, and no ill effects. Mounted to the frame, as shown in the photo, and to the existing hole in the early style triples, there's not really enough travel in the damper itself to permit lock to lock turning. Almost, but not quite enough. Didn't trouble me too much, I did it similarly anyway.

If im cornering fast enough to warrant placing the steering on the lock then I better be wearing leathers and a 4 leaf clover on this 360.

That's exactly what I did on my XS650SK more than 19 years ago, still works fine according to the new owner. Had to attach a piece of flat stock aluminum to the frame for the pivoting attachment.
