Mounting Tires with Irons

Been Around the Block
Hey guys,

I searched around and couldn't find anything on this. I got my tires and am wondering if I can just mounted them with my irons, since they are tubed on spoked rims. My only concern is scratch my nice powder coated wheels.

What do you guys do?

Theres a really good couple of videos on youtube, but personally i bought irons to take my old tires off and wouldnt attempt it again with my brand new PC...might just be my lack of patience

Might want to give this a try out

Brilliant!

I'll see if I have time to try that tonight. I just don't have a compressor to get the tubes inflated after. So I may just drive to a gas station with the wheels.

Thanks.

If you can schmooze a tire guy, get some murphy's tire soap. Lubes like crazy, and dries sticky to hold the tries. I struggled with lots of other products before i got my hands on this stuff. I brought in a 2" plastic tub, gone through MULTIPLE tires on multiple bikes and haven't even come close to running out.

Well there is a local guy that mounts tire with a No-Mar Motorcycle tire machine and he charges $10/tire. I suppose I could just outsource this.

I tried lube, and I was still heaving and grunting. ;)

Use windex to lubricate the tyre and rim. Use plastic rim protectors (or a piece of cardboard) if using tyre irons.

$10/tire is a great price and saves you the headache. I've mounted all my tires with irons and curse myself each time. If you do DIY, definitely get something to protect the paint as mentioned above...I matter how careful you are, on your first time you'll bang them up pretty bad without.

If you leave the tyres in the sun for a while they get much easier to fit.

No sun? find somewhere hot to store them for a bit.

I use tyre black as lube to help fit tyres, works like a charm and cleans up well too.

Yes, if you leave them in the sun you don't even have to use tyre irons you can tread them on with your foot.

I took them to get mounted this morning. The tires are meant for tubeless, so the beads are incredibly stiff. Thanks for all the replies guys.
