My 1981 CX500C Racer

Here ya go. My bike has a rooted stator in the high speed coil. We tested it putting out between 3 and 30 volts, which is way less than the required 100.

Now it mentions the white wire fix whereby you run the white wire to both wires on the other side of the plug. I can't remember what's dodgy about that but there was something. Most fellas suggest gapping the plugs a little closer. It works, i've done it. You can ride the bike for a few good months like that.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but ultimately your engine will have to come out and do the triple bypass: Stator, water pump and timing chain. Why the other two? Cause they are a common fault and should be done while you're in there.

Hey Staffy,

this is very valuable information and describes 1:1 what I experienced (overheating and thereafter issues with 4000+ rpms). I will work on diagnosis upcoming weekend and see if I need to replace the stator.

Gosh! I hoped that the bike wont suck more money but a new stator... ouch!

Thanks anyway. This Forum rocks!

Cheers

Timo

Shame you're not here in aus as there's a fella making up a box as a replacement for the stator. It's a good piece of kit by all reports but like most guys, job kids, etc. Can't really be making them up globally. Still, get those other things done while you're in there, re tension the cam chain regularly and you should be got for 50,000 miles.

Hmmm, heard that an "Ignitech CDI" replacing the Stock CDI does not depend any longer on the Ignition impulse coming from the stator.
This means that it works with just the standard 12V (any range between 8V-18V) and gives a sh*t about the messed up stator.

Does anybody have experience with that? @Staffy: maybe that's what you mean? I found no plug 'n' play set available over here

Nah, sorry mate that isn't what i meant. It's a box that replaces the stator and still utilizes the CDI. I generates it's own 90v (i think) output, but it won't be on any websites or whatnot as it's a local thing a guy in Aus makes up in small batches out of his garage. That said i've heard of the ignitech mod on the CX. I'm not aware of how it works but it may be a viable option. If you get onto choppercharles you will probably find some info on the mod there as i'm sure there's cx guys there who've done it. Last time i was on the site the search function wasn't working properly so you'll probably need to search the site via a google advanced search. You may even find some other local CXers on there as it's a US based forum.

hi guys,

just to give an update: I tried this cable fix (how is it called? "white wire fix"?) to link both ignition circuits together. The result was, that low end remained good but above 4000 rpm it totally cut out. But this tells me that you're right and the issue is definitely caused by a smoked stator.

got a replacement stator now and need to find time to install it.

Thanks for your help.

Timo

P.S.: I touched one of those cables. DARN! That's a nice bunch of Volts coming out there.
P.P.S.: got a set of used tarozzi pegs like these (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Universal-Fixed-Rearsets-Rear-Set-Tarozzi-NEW-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27b17b84b9QQitemZ170481386681QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories). anybody an idea how I can manage to install a shifter pedal rearset on the CX?

Shifter, with great degree of difficulty due to the fact it pivots the wrong way. The best bet is to cut and shut the existing shifter to move the placement of the shift lever back and weld in a section to where it attaches the gearbox. Not sure if that makes much sense but it's 2:30 in the morning and i'm out to it.

just an update: got a spare engine and I'm about to swap it this winter with a few other small things (rearsets, new wheel, maybe fairing...)

update. spare engine is in and workin fine
