My 73 Yamaha TX650 Cafe Project

MN_TX650

Been Around the Block
Making some progress. I picked this up from a guy who wanted it out of his way. Got it running and started to cafe it out. Waiting in the wings are a XS750 gas tank, and a fiberglass tailpiece....that just arrived today! Can't wait to get wrenching again. Waiting on parts sucks

The day I brought her home:

Been riding it a little bit while working out some motor issues, and have it running fairly smooth. Still have a little backfire to sort out, but it is basically ready for the new tank, seat, and paint!!

IMO it looks great how it is . Maybe even focus the paint on how the stock scheme is . Very nice bike .

1973 another classic... for $300, why can't I find deals like that!

... if I were You... I would keep it stock (it will be worth alot more as everyone butchers them) and find a late 70's early 80's 650 special to cafe.

Just my opinion though.

Had a few minutes accouple nights ago, so I set the tank and new seat pan on the bike to see if I was going to like the way it looked. I am digging it thus far!! Need to get the tank cleaned and sealed up, and the mounts modified. Hoping to get some of that done this weekend. The rear fender is coming off, and the fiberglass tail section will sit right on the frame...no gap, and nice and low. :D The tank will also be about 3" further forward once it is mounted. What do you all think?

Says above it's an XS 750 tank.

Looks awesome!

In fact, I need a new tank, and now I have another option. ;)

Whatever you do, don't lose or damage those sidecovers!!! They are damned hard to find in good original condition.

Nice. The Yamaha 650 makes a great cafe bike (I may be slightly biased :)). That tank works well.

I originally set out to build a CB750 cafe...but stumbled into this 650. At first I wasn't sure how it would look as a cafe bike, as all I had really seen was 650 Bobbers. The cafe parts aren't as readily available as they are for the CB's, but I think it is shaping up nicely. The 750 tank and seat really make it. Can't wait to get them both mounted! Haven't had much time to fart around with it lately, but hope to this weekend.

Yep - you can sell the tank and sidecovers and recover at least 1/2 of what you paid for the bike. Complete sets are hard to find in their original colors. I did the same with my 1972.

did you sell them all together...or the sidecovers seperate of the tank? The tank has been sealed and has new petcocks. Fixed a small seeping leak with some gastank repair material, but it is on the back under the seat. What should I expect to bring thru sale? I only paid $300 for the bike complete seen a pair of sidecovers go on ebay for $150

Nice bike!
In the shape it looks to be in you stole that thing for $300.00!

The guy was a friend of my wife's parents. He got it for nothing like 10 some odd years ago, and wanted it out of his way. Said he had $300 into it, so I offered him $300. He said, come get it tonight and it is yours! Even had a bunch of old old manuals for it

I sold the package all together. Seat, tank and sidecovers. Seem to recall getting about $300 for the lot, but it was a good year+ ago.

The fiberglass tail piece is made by CafeRace, Inc. You can find them on ebay. It is their generic fit seat. I believe it is listed for the CB500/550

very nice to see another tx650 floating around other than tims mega money monster.
I have a 73 as well. I did a few alterations tank from cb500 seat off tx750. my rear brake arm is off honda cb360 cut and altered. run later swing arm gained 2 inches in length. put 14 1/2 inch shocks to compensate for the length of the arms. did dual disk conversion adn oil cooler as well. I have a front drum I hope to rebuild someday.

good luck

Great start. Keep the pictures coming. The 650s make a great retro look cafe bike. I'm looking for one too.
In the meanwhile I have to complete my 79 CB750, a 76 CB750, and a 83 XR350. Now looking for the Yamaha 650 and a Honda Dream or Black Bomber.

Great to see your project.
