My build and progress- 1982 Yamaha XJ550

Bought this bike for $700 in pretty rough shape. Everything is good with the motor, runs great. It was just really ugly. I'm making some progress on it though.

Next step is getting that motor all painted black and wrapping my headers/exhaust.

The previous owner should be shot for crimes against motorcycles!

Even that new hoop, seat and tail light have made a huge difference, keep it up! I reckon strip all the ugly paint off the tank and give it a nice brushed look with some sandpaper then clear it, that'll pop nicely with the seat. Also black those wheels out too! ;)

Unfortunately, the tank is a little dinged up so the brushed look probably wouldn't work. Sucks, I love that look. I have the idea to put a 3-4" red stripe down the middle of the tank with black pinstriping. I also have black Yamaha fork decals that are gonna go on the side of the tank. I think that will make it look better.

Wrapping the exhaust and painting the motor black are gonna make it look really awesome hopefully. I've just gotta figure out what color to wrap the exhaust- I'm thinking I might do tan.

Re: My build and progress

What's the best way to get all of the grime/buildup off of the exhaust? I tried using a really course brush and soap/water, but I didn't have much luck with it.
