My CB 350 Budget bobber/cafe

Haven't stopped by here in a while, but couldn't have gone better! I was going down through the welding pics and was thinking "oh no it's going to be a hard tail" and BAM! I saw the shocks on there, it looks sick man!! Good work! BTW, is that a front fender on the back wheel? Or am I just not seeing the black plastic piece because the lighting?

Can't wait to see how it comes along, I'll give you a text or PM when I have some good riding time. I was kinda screwed for a while had a few things go wrong (busted exhaust studs, broken fuel valve, stuck clutch) but ordered a bunch of OEM parts from bike bandit. Quick question since I know your in elgin, have you been to that forest preserve by your house (kinda down 19 towards streamwood)? I'm looking for the old junkyard back there that has some cool stuff but couldn't find it last time I was out there.
 
ooh hell ya the junk yards are there... there is 2 (only cars though but everything you can imagine) and the 4th is a repo lot... I am actually taking my boat up there next week and see if i can wheel and deal with the guy to trade him my boat for a gold wing and an old honda CB... that way i have some more winter projects... thanks for the ups on the frame... my last bobber build was a hard tail... road it from Chicago to KC... Sold it in KC and flew back... learned my lesson... funny thing was i picked up the for sale sign in southern IL... back tire was just toooo small for a hard tail, busted my back all up...
the rear fender is the front... i am actually not to sure what i am going to do with it yet... not sure if i will use the front or cut and mod the rear to work... we will have to see on that one... spoke to my paint supplier yesterday about the paint i want to order for this bike... man i think that he is just as excited as i am to get me the paint set up... made the final decision... doing a rootbeer with light flake... then gold will have a 70's amount of crushed glass flake in it... now i just need to figure out how i am going to lay it all out... the frame will be black... front fork shrouds will be rootbeer as will the headlight casing... fork lowers black... wheels white, with black spokes and hubs... and a black frame and bars... that is pretty much the bike.. getting pumped up for this sucker! can not work on it this week got to finish my house as i have complany coming in this week...

here is a brighter pic of the frame... ill take some good ones tonight... depending how far i get with my surround sound and speaker wires inside the house I may do soome more sanding on the tank and finish that up

well as promised here are some pics of the frame with a better camera and in the garage... i was not happy with all the lines on the tank so i bondo'd that back up for TAKE 2... will sand that down... finished hte bondo on the tank and had a bit left over so i smoothed out the rear where the welds where done and ground down... jsut to make it flawless.... still need to sand of course still... lots of work ahead but the fun part at least! (also got a CRAP load done on the house!)

The bike looks awesome man, keep up the good work. What gauge steel did you use on the rear shock mount plates? I am very seriously considering this route opposed to lowering blocks and short shocks.
 
what i did was cut off the fender struts... from there i cut out 1.5 in out of the lower V portion of the frame, then i cut a 1/4 in slit out of the lower seat pan tubes (Square stock) this will allow when you bend down the seat pan it will move evenly... i used a level to make sure it was perfect... then tacked it on both sides. I left the top portion of the seat pan a bit longer so that it could still be flush on top and not a mess of weld. after that i gave my buddy the measurements i needed for the triangle for the side plates... he cut them out of "Heavy duty steel" brought them out... we welded it all around on 2 sides of the triangles... then on the back as well, then tacked a angle support behind it... this will hold no problem... when I cut my actual shock mounts i am going to make them on the mill so that each one is perfect , i will actually run that though the triangle and use the cross in the frame as an additional point of support... it will be welded there as well as the triangle... PLENTY strong... i have to finish my measurements to get the shocks perfectly UP and DOWN strait. i actually got this idea from a bike i saw on EBAY... he did something like this but i went ahead and lowered the seat pan and used HD shocks instead of just lowering shocks... i like a big beefy shock on the bike... here is a pick to help you get an idea where th cuts where made and where i got the idea... OOH YA... where you cut the 1/4 in slice out... we filled that all in with a piece of steel on the inside then filled it from underneath with weld...ground the hell out of it and got what I wanted... VERY pleased with this so far... let me know if i can help you at all!

Ok I understand everything you said but your frame is a bit different, so I modified what you had a little bit. Check it out:

This makes a little more sense to me since I will be able to cut and bend the top tubes (A) right almost at the joint where (A) and (C) of the triangle meet. That way I can reweld the top tube (A) that is notched, to the side bar (C) in the triangle when I get done bending it. Let me know if this makes sense.

If you have a better suggestion for this type of frame do enlighten me. This is my first (bike) build so it is definitely fly bye.
 
to do this kind of work you will haev to use a jig or you will loose the true on your frame... tack it to a table first...
 
Any updated pics. of the bike. I plan on bobbing out my kz400, but i'm debating on hardtailing the frame.
 
ahh man it is on hold... Tiger coatings has a new powder coat coming out that is ULTRA gold... looks like BLING gold... doing my frame in that once it is released... they also have a new brass powder that i am waiting to get in... looks pretty dang awesome!
 
This is really looking good - I dig the skinny rear fender.

I think you're wise not to go with the paint on Whitewalls - a buddy of mine did those on his Dyna and they browned out pretty badly - even after the prescribed number of coats...
 
ya i agree... i just got in all the powder coat i am using for this bike, all of it is HIGH gloss gold, battleship gray, and heavy flake black...
i am shooting the tins in a mix a buddy of mine is making me out of sherman williams auto paint... most of the bike will be a light diamond flake black with bass boat flake gold scallions...
the all gold wheels are going to look insane!
got to finish the T-reX first! then he 350... the a chopper rebuild... go my hands full!
 
Another nice build JRK. As soon as I finish my XS650, I will be doing a bike for my wife. She likes what I am doing and she is stoked to have her own. I was thinking of a bobber for her, just haven't found the right bike. Keep the pics coming.....

I know this might be far from your thoughts right now but I was wondering about your plans for the battery, electronics and side covers? Troy
 
def no side covers that is for sure.... i have them on the shelf you want them they are yours... it is in the garage in back with the rockets... waiting on me to finsh the cafe, girls bobber, and do my winter work to my Harley... then she will come out and i will finish it though the summer on rainy days...
 
Just wondering what happened to this project. I'm thinking about doing a 350 bobber at some point. Any progress bro?
 
nothing... waiting for winter to come... then i will hop on it... I have been collecting parts and planning out the build. i want to have it done in just a few months cause i really want to build a harley chop this winter (have a sporty donor) in the summer i am so slammed with customers work and trying to get fast turn around for them that i have to put my projects on the slelf for a bit. if you have any ?s just let me know! i was actually ordering paint last night for this sucker!!! Midnight black with pearl additive, and bass boat gold with ultra heavy dimond flake! going to be wild!!!!
 
Damn man, yep this is the bike. This thing is going to be way cool. I think you should sell her to me. She doesn't deserve to be collecting dust, LOL. I love these little bikes slammmed! Should look great when you're done> . Oops, if I'm trying to buy it I should say its going to look like shit!
