my fiberglass seat build (1st Time)

And when I say first time it really shows. So here are some tips that can probably help someone starting off that i wish i would have known.
I started off with that same green foam everyone uses called desert foam at my local hobby lobby.(everyone says its inexpensive!!!!) I didnt think so its was like 30 total which isnt too bad but its still nice to keep costs down. so i used spray adhesive to stick everything together, then used a serated butter knife i bought at walmart for $.96 and sanding it with 100 grit

note its way faster if you have a sanding block.

my spray sdhesive kept wanting to come undone oh and wear clothes you dont mind getting foam dust on it seeps in and only come off with high pressure air or whatever.

I then taped a tube around the edges for foam to sit and taped everything off with masking tape.

next I prepped the fiberglass mat (note its better to use the woven mat its so much easier to work with. and its better the you cut the mat before hand cause your hands will be all sticky to do anything once you start.

SO HERES WHERE I MESSED UP!!! I only had enough mat and resin to do like 1 & 1/2 layers of mat so i let that dry.

My mistake was after it dried I went to get more mat and resin and didnt clean it up before i put the next layer so the stupid hairs that dried up ended up as big bumps.
SO! if your not going to do all the layers immediately I suggest reinforcing from the inside so you dont have to deal with all this grinding like i did to save yourself the hassle, and the edges tend to pop out all wavy so find some way to wedge it under the seat or have it raised on something so that it falls flat.
Since mine came out so crazy i grinded off all the bumps used filler sanded then just upholstered everything myself just to hide all the ugliness haha for mounting i drilled 2 holes into the frame and put some wood in between so i dont crack it cause after the first drying off fiberglass i mocked it up and sat on it and it cracked! (hence the reinforcing).
So thats that and no harms done!

Where are you getting it? Desert foam is $6 for 8 blocks at Jo Ann Fabrics, and they have 40% and 50% off coupons all the time, so I paid $8 for 16 blocks.

at hobby lobby... Ah dam there isn't one far from me either, oh well all in all I spent like 60 on the seat so it wasnt all that bad.

in regards to letting it dry. is it ok to add more layers after the resin has dried.this is my worst fear is i will screw it up by not doing all the layers at once.ive got my plug done but havent gotten around to doing the glass yet

dont even worry about that all you have to do is, after it dries add layers to the bottom of the seat for reinforcement
if you do want to add layers to the top of the seat just make sure you sand it down good and make sure there are no bubbles but the easiest way is to just add layers to the bottom so that way you dont have to worry about how it looks and your first layer will come out good because of the mold.

Definately sand between layer/coats. you can also do a coat of just resin and no glass if you need to.

Just go for it. Worse case, you start over.
Here is a pic of the one I did. It's XPS foam, shaped, coated with epoxy resin. It was my first attempt. Turned out good. I carved out the bottom and epoxied that as well. the bottom is a wood base.

I made my first seat last winter and it was a pain in the ass but it didn't come out too bad. I'll probably redo it this year though. Keep at it man and you'll get right.

wow that looks great Mike!!! Ive tried fiberglass, now metal, wood is definitely next!

Thanks, I didnt like the idea of wood at first, but it was an easy base to start with. I reall want to try carbon fiber at some point.

i saw a nice write up for using a stock seat as well. just take off the vinyl then cut your foam to shape you want and revinyl it look great! im trying to barter for some upholstery (waiting on a new job) ill make a write up though!
