My First Build 74' CB 350F1

Have wanted to do a Cafe build for a while now but just couldn't pull the trigger on anything until last week. I saw a guy selling a 74' Cb350f in a box with a spare motor. So I went about 30 min away to look at it and couldn't leave without it.

Here it is. I sat the seat and tank on just to get a look at it. (excuse the mess, I just moved to this location.)

The spare motor with this epic tank on it.

Re: First Bike CB 350F1

That tank is freakin' awesome, I dig the weirder shit people painted on their tanks. You should hang onto that and use that other tank!

Re: First Bike CB 350F1

I plan to do exactly that. It is just to interesting to ruin. Will probably just hang it in the garage. The black one has minor dings that I can repair pretty easy. I'm in the middle of trying to decide on modifying the bottom of the tank to make a bit more room for the electronics or not right now.

Re: First Bike CB 350F1

Is it odd that they have them running on the beach on one side and then in front of mountains on the other?

I think the shining stars with the sun in the sky is more odd.

Re: First Bike CB 350F1

So I took the spare motor apart a bit while waiting to do a fantasy draft tonight. It appears either this motor went through a rebuild at some point or just doesn't have a whole lot of miles on it.

Everything up top seems to be very clean even with some fresh oil still on it.

The chambers do have a good bit a carbon buildup on them. Any recommendations to remove this without taking the valves out?
Or should I just take the retainers off and remove the valves?

No lip at all on the top of the wall. just a minor bit of carbon.

If anyone had any good places to get oem gaskets (if they still offer them) and also the Orings for the oil pump that would be great. It appeared that there might have been a leak in the bottom left corner so with that and just being curious how it works i decided to take it off.

Looks like someone had a little trouble getting these off at some point.

Nice little rats nest.

Anyone have any ideas besides the oil pan or pump leaking to have all this buildup in here?

Something else I noticed is the bolt and shaft going into this sensor actually has some play to it with the bolt tight. (no it is not the eyelet moving the entire shaft moves)

Is this bad to have this rust?

Very clean under this cover.

Should this be wet with oil residue or no? If no can i just use a brake cleaner type of spray to get it off? They are all in spec so they should be good to reuse.

Not happy with the splines on the kick starter but other than that everything else looks good.

And lastly very clean under the cover for the points. I am on the fence of going with a Dynatek Ignition.

Took some time the other day to visit an old friend who is a bit of a pack rat. He had a few old magazines setting around.

This little guy just chilling in the corner.

An Elby's Big Boy

Rare 2stroke.

The I decided I was sick of working on the floor and built a table for the bike to be up on.

Also took the case apart.

Cannot get all of the studs out without them feeling like they might snap....

Need a different bolt for my puller to get the generator off.

After I took everything apart I masked everything off and began bead blasting.

Just wanted to get an idea of how it will look.

That is it for today. Would like to get the upper and lower case blasted tomorrow.

Got the generator off of the crank so I can install new seals.

Stripped the tank and found some dents that had been filled. So I worked a bit on them.

Kind of a pain in the ass getting the old Honda badge bracket off, but it needs to go.

Had some fun with the hammer last night.

Is this rebuild-able? I don't really like any of the replacement options and want to keep it simple without modding this tanks outlet.

Very nice idea. The project is coming along very nicely. How did you smooth out the dents from the hammer, at the knee indents?

It could just be the lighting making them less visible. The small dents are still there. I used a rounded plastic hammer to start then used a mix of another plastic hammer and a brass hammer to fine tune the dent and slope of the metal. A layer of final glaze filler should easily smooth things out and I will also need some thin final glaze on some other small imperfections in the tank.

Looks like it to me. Rebuild kits contain all the rubber you need and a screen and are reasonable and available, and I imagine that metal will come clean.

Thanks for the info. I have seen a few rebuild kits, but kind of wondered why people would opt for a non-oem replacement over just rebuilding. When guys say their petcock "goes bad" or "is bad" what do they mean then if it can just be rebuilt?

Looks like a great project, looks like you could use new motor cover hardware, 4into1 has stainless complete sets that are awesome. As far as your valves go, if you can, I'd take them off, take a wire wheel to them, and hit them with some lapping compound before remounting them, it was worth the time and effort to me, but you've got twice as many valves to worry about.

Good question and I'm not really sure, since it hasn't ever happened to me. Maybe messed up threads on the bowl, broken tube or bent or broken other pieces? Dunno -- they're pretty simple and the rubber is what makes 'em work and not leak.

Thanks. You are very correct on that, most of the hardware is ruined from either time and rust or people stripping them out not using correct tools to remove stubborn bolts.

This has been my best friend on this project so far.

I'll have to look into the 4into1 kit. I've been thinking of possibly using black oxide or stainless ARP 12point hardware. I have kinda a thing for them after using them on another project of mine.

The valves have since been taken out of the head. I do plan to just clean them up and try my hand at lapping them.
