my first IN OVER MY HEAD project

ok cool. im gonna try to get some sand paper tomorrow. what is the best way to get the frame clean? wet sanding? sand blasting?

There are good tutorials on-line. Buffing wheels come in different grades of stiffness. Some dudes will sand then buff, some just use a cutting wheel with black compound and work their way to the polishing compounds. Sanding makes my fingers tired. I'd rather hit it with a stiff sisal pad. Kind of up to the individual. Takes lots of time and elbow grease, but you'll love the results. A warning, though, buffing can be a bit frustrating. Also, some people use an angle grinder. I try it every now and then, but it can be a wild ride, so hang on! Wheeee!!!

i started to strip the paint off of the engine. what a mess! and i hate chemicals. this seems like its gonna be a crazy job. how the hell do i get the nasty paint of of the fins and then what would be the best method to repaint it?

here is the cover that goes over the electric starter. you can see the black paint on it in some older pics of the engine. i forgot to take a before pic. i hate that there are some dings in this thing.

Looks like it's coming along. Let the aircraft stripper do its thing. Be careful of chemical burns! Get some dishwashing latex gloves and a stiff long bristle brush for the tight spots.

PS I'd plug those exhaust ports!

yeah im gonna plug those things. i didnt plan on working my way up that high tonight. what would be the best way to plug them? i told you i was completely clueless on all of this.

i will certainly get some dish gloves. the latex gloves got a little eaten up tonight. haha

Get some thin flat plastic (something laying around) and cut / drill it to the shape of the ports. Make some crummy carboard gaskets for the plastic, and use the original exhaust clamps if you can. If not, just use the nuts and some washers to clamp the plastic + gaskets down to cover the holes.
