My first seat

Been Around the Block
After looking at and reading numerous threads on this wonderful site regarding seat building using fibreglass I finally had a go myself.

I was helped by my Father-in-Law (who is an engineering genius), we made a wooden form to mould the seat to.

We used black gel coat for the top surface and fibreglassed away.

This is the outcome, I am really, really pleased with the way it turned out and should look superb on my CB550K3.

Looks awesome! Can't wait for the pics of it on your bike. I definately want to try to use gelcoat next time. Looks great.

Could you give a few more details about the process you used? Especially your use of wood. Also a pic of the bottom of the seat and how you plan to attach it to the bike would help me understand how you pro's do it. Thanks!

x2 I'd like to see set up pics and some pics of the bottom, and all the specific products you used. I made a seat using the stock seat pan which I'm 80% happy with but something like this is def in my future...someday. Your's looks really really great. keep up the good work and your bike will def be one to be envied!

Thank you all for the kind comments.

I would love to say this was all my own work, but as I mentioned at the start of the thread my Father-in-Law was the driving force. He is a retired aerospace engineer and is absolutely amazing.

We made a simple base using some pine we had, this was sanded and shaped to the desired dimensions. After this we sealed the wood and fibreglassed this base to make a mould, once this mould was complete we let it harden.

We then applied to the mould releasing agent and then PVA, we then applied (sprayed) 2 coats of black gel coat (allowing each application to dry completely). After this we simply built up the fibreglass using fibreglass matting and using a roller to ensure the air bubbles are removed.

We let it cure and then removed it from the mould using a mixture of compressed air, wedges and prayers.

We also watched lots and lots of videos on the internet regarding how to make the mould and how to apply gel coat and fibreglass.

I will take some pictures of the underneath for you all in a couple of minutes.

Some pictures for you all.

As for mounting it? Not yet 100% sure, it has been designed to sit on the frame rails and rear loop not over them, probably going to weld some support struts and bolt it to them.

I have just finished modifying the frame and welding in the rear loop and battery box etc, the new tank arrived today, so may have to do some cutting for precise fitting. Then need to cover it in........ orange leather!!!! Sorry absolutely love orange so the bike is black, chrome/polished with some orange highlights like grips, wires, etc.
