My home-made fiberglass seat UPDATED 12/15 WITH PICS

Nate

Been Around the Block
So I decided to try to make my own glass seat just for something to do. I started with the tail off my stock xs tank, coupled with a peice of foam from an old weight bench. I cut the foam to the width of the frame and I shaped the tail to overhang the rear frame loop, matching the kick-up. (I like the stubby look seats, 12 o'clock position. I then covered the "mold" with tin foil. Oh, i forgot to add it is important to drink beer throughout this process. Then I cut some fiberglass sheet to the shapes I needed for the tail, bumm stop and seat surface. I then slathered the whole thing with turtle wax. Next, I mixed up the resin and hardner and coated the whole thing, placed the fiber on and then coated it again. I used those pink bondo spatulas to spread it, paint brush was way too difficult. This stuff starts to set up fast as hell. This is where the beer becomes even more important as it begins to chemically react with the resin fumes and imaginary people join you in the garage to finish up. Well, Let it set up fully over night and then trimmed it up, trial placed it on the bike and it came out really cool. It's a little flimsy right now so I'm gonna stiffen it up with more fiber and resin in a couple places and glue some padding on it and see if I can find someone to upholster it. I plan on upholstering the whole thing, I really dig that look. I had planned to paint the cowl and just stick on racing foam but it's a little imperfect so I figure I'll go the upholstered route.

where I live, you can get the fiber anywhere they sell bondo, auto repair stuff....it comes in a 2' x 4' sheet for about $4...are you in the states?

Re: My home-made fiberglass seat

You can get fibreglass sheets and resin at Canadian Tire.

Or this place has it all:

Smithcraft Fibreglass Supplies
970 The Queensway, Etobicoke, ON M8Z 1P6
416-259-6946

Just about finished covering it but I ran out of rivets.....also have to make some adjustments to the inner corners going into the tail. All in all not too bad for my first stab at it, and the scavenged spare tire cover seems to work well for upholstery!!
