My "new" GPZ 750.. thoughts and future plans.. with photos

so earlier this week i purchased a 85 GPZ 750 in perfect running condition, and in pretty good cosmetic condition. Today was the 1st day i had the chance to wash and attempt to detail the bike. It just need some elbow grease. I wanted to see what the bike looked like without that massive front fairing, and the enormous rear fender. So in the process of breaking everything down to give it a solid cleaning, I did just that.

In doing research and browsing hundreds of photos.. you hardly / if at all see anyone turn the GPZ into a fighter/cafe style design. I'm not sure why.. I absolutely loved the way this bike looked without all the plastics. I do know that alot of people who own these bikes, try to keep them sacred and original. I don't plan on cutting or destroying any of the original parts, but I am definitely starting the project of removing everything from this bike starting next week..

heres is where it started and where i would like for it to be... sorry these are crappy cell phone pics.. will have some high quality before and afters when the project actually starts.. let me know what you think.

1st night i bought the bike: horrible pic

the breakdown cleanup shot with the monster front fairing and side fairings removed. Sorry imagine the seat is on. Had it removed for the cleaning. Didnt think to put it back on for photos:

and here is my photoshopped version removing that eye sore of a rear fender and the gauge cluster shopped out. Imagine this shot with a single 8" round head light and "fender eliminator" look in the rear. I absolutely loved the way this looks given the shape of the bike.. :

just wondering why people dont go this direction more often with these bikes.. obviously these photos arent complete ideas.. but it gave me great ideas for what direction i want to take this bike.. It really started to clean up nicely.. can't wait to get started on the new project..

only paid $875 for this bike by the way.. new carb work.. new tires.. registered until next August...new paint.. 15k miles.. runs like a dream.. i have already been offered $1200 for it and had it 5 days.. great investement
thoughts?

I just got myself an 84 gpz750, I am cafe-ing it. I have tons of extra parts if you need anything. Btw, I cant see any of your pics, not sure why.

Have fun dude!

Looks good man. I know Travis has been building one for the last couple of years. Look up ThompsonMX and project "Dammit". He has done some fancy work. Cool bike you have there!

I love those bikes. Beautiful score. I'd take off the fairing and square headlight and find a nice round light and mini gauges for it. Maybe a fly screen.

already have some brackets, bar end mirrors, and front turn signals on order.. trying to decide which/what size round headlight im going to go with.. really like the way it looked without that front fairing..

Nice bike you have I have some things if you need them like an 810 kit. I put a GSXR swingarm and rear wheel on mine. I haven't rode it yet but it looks damn cool. Keep it up I'd like to see it with the round headlight on it. I actually kept my gauges just changed the bracket to mount to the triples that I was using.

My GPZ900 is fighter'ish at the moment cause I haven't finished restoring the mid-faring and bellypan. The PO trimmed the rear plastic fender off below the seat so it is a little more cafe'ish but still a 2-up - would be easy to make it a bumpstop type though.

Can drop some decent weight off dumping the upper fairing/frame and the big clocks and replacing with a round headlight and simpler gauges.

Gave me something to think about ...

got all the parts in this week.. should be able to put it all together this weekend.. when i get some daylight.. and ill take some photos for sure

ya removing that front fairing will definitely save some weight.. especially since its all hanging over that front tire.. made a huge difference in the feel of the bike when it was removed.. i'd say with all the brackets and plastic.. it was close to 20lbs..

well, i went to my stepfather's 3500 sq ft workshop/motorcycle heaven this weekend and completed (for now) the tear down and "fighterish" conversion... i can't even begin to explain the world of difference in the bike handling and feel wise.. i removed probably 30lbs of parts, mostly which was dangling over the front end.. extremely happy with whats done so far..

i'm working up a project thread with photos right meow.. should be up tonight

BEAUTIFUL bike!

can i just put in a little bit of constructive criticism from a fellow photographer?

stop cropping out the mirrors and wheels in your shots! Otherwise good shots.

Thats one of the first things I learned when i started studying photography; dont crop out a piece of the subject unless if its intentional (such as if your taking pictures of one specific part).

Beautiful bike though. really is.
