My New Project: 1981 Honda CBX "school bike" - 6 cylinders of Go-power

Always cool to see a CBX thread! I have a little knowlege of these beasts.

BTW, you're either a carb guy or your not. If you are, they're not as bad as you think. Looking at all those carbs on the CBX may look a bit scary. But, 1 carb or 6 carbs, I see no difference.

Well I am a carb guy and I see what you're saying. Thanks for trying to give me some props and support. I appreciate it.

Truth is there's 6x more jets to clog; 6x more o-rings to fail; 6x more slides to jam and needles to bend and floats to flood...there's exactly 6x more things that can go wrong than on my thumper. And all 6 need to be synched of course. So it's not a walk in the park...but...

This carb I've got looks really clean and basically unused. So I am not afraid!

I am making progress...got exhaust/headers painted with VHT primer, put on the valve cover gasket, cleaned up the monster front fairing that goes on this bike. Looks much better and it's growing on me. Also installed a new rear brake rotor and cleaned all the rust out of the tank using this cool stuff called Evaporust. Check it out if you want a cheap (under $30) way to get all the rust out of an old tank w/o putting bolts in it and putting it in the dryer and all that stuff. Or in combination with those treatments..
Gonna rebuild rear master cylinder today. Aloha.

Those CBX tanks are very hard to find rust free or even in decent condition. Mine was awful! I had cut a good portion of the top of mine out to retro fit a GSXR filler neck. I gave it the best cleaning I could with the tank being as open as it was. Of course the final touch was tank sealer.

Back on the subject of carbs, most of what I find is sht people fcked up trying to fix them! Mine suffered dearly from the previous owner. After figuring out what he had done, I fixed his fck ups and was able to bring the carbs back from the scrap pile. No problems after that. BTW, the 1979 carbs are different and by themselves. 1980-82 carbs are basically all the same.

BTW, what's up with the exhaust? plans? The CBX sounds like no other!

I completely agree about carbs. I leave mine alone unless there's a definite problem. These ones haven't been on the bike yet, but they are looking good and will only be getting a good (second) cleaning before a test run. If you're a CBXer, then you know that a guy Mike Nixon wrote a CBX carb "Bible" and that's what we're using to get these up and going.

As for the exhaust, the stock pipes were really rusty and there's no place here I can get anything rechromed. They were in good shape otherwise though, so I sanded off the rust, then primered and painted them with VHT primer (the flameproof 2000º kine) followed by VHT Cast Iron 2000º paint. They came out looking sick! The cast iron is like a titanium-ish color and there's not much sign of all the rusty bits.

I called the makers of VHT paint and got directly from the horse's mouth that the way to cure this paint is to do both primer and top coats before you cure either one. In other words there's no need to cure the primer, then the top coat separately. I'll be curing them on the bike and from reading a bit, it looks like that if you add a couple steps to the recommended way, it works even better. The can says a 10 min heat cure with bike running, the cool, then 20 minute heat cure, the cool, then run for 30 min+. I've heard it'll work better if you do a 3 minute run, cool, then a 6 minute, cool, then as the can says...who knows but I'll try it.

Though I don't have high hopes for how this stuff will hold up over the long run, it's the same chemistry as the black high temp header paint and I've used it before and it does turn grey after a while, but no biggie to touch it up. The color is really nice and assuming it lasts at all it's a good $30 solution to my problem of a shitty-looking stock exhaust. I'm glad to have it because with it and the stock airbox and stock jettings - maybe I'll be in the 5-dimersional "ballpark".

btw..here's the project thread. I'll add it to my signature as well...

I hope the project goes well for you.
I had a CBXz (the proper one...in the silver), in the early 80's, and it was an awesome bit of kit back then. 105 galloping ponies were enough to blow my mates Z1B into the weeds pretty easily. I had a Marshall endurance 6-1, and it sounded like an F1 race car ! Rev limiters were only for girls back then, and that CBX would rev for England....in fact it was scarey to think of so many parts all moving so fast inside the motor. After I sold it, I regretted it so much, I went and bought it back !

Enjoy !
