This is my first bike and first build. Bought in 2011 and now almost finished....almost.
At first I was inspired by Wrenchmonkees SR500 but then discovered Flat Trackers!!!!!
I especially liked the pre-70s, pre-glass, pillion saddled flat trackers and so started the idea. I designed the bike, got the frame chopped to my specs, removed all extraneous brackets, pillion footrests, etc put in new bearings in frame, engine, hubs, newcush drive, new spokes, fork seals and springs, new shocks, new piston, new conrod, new dual oil line. Powder coated frame and when I tried to fit the engine I realized that the frame was bent. The bike arrived without the front mounting brackets so I could never have known. These bikes are rare as hens teeth here in South Africa...for sale anyway.
SO I went to a bike shop and chatted to the guy who thinks my bike will never be finished, bemoaning the fact that I had no idea where in hell I'd get another frame and that the frame straighteners were giving me sh*t about taking the engine out in the first place and then left and 30 minutes later he calls me to say that the guy who came in as I was leaving came in to ask if he knew anyone who wanted to buy an SR500 frame!!!!
Then I had my powder coated wheels and hubs sandblasted as I didn't like the all black and spent 2 weeks hand sanding them to a nice smooth finish.
SO to make this incredibly long story short, chopped new frame, coated it, put engine in, tank, bars, custom seat etc. Wouldn't start as carb was waaaay too rich, burned out my Iridium plug, found out there was no 1 st gear because I cleaned the shifter drum and put the plate on incorrectly...after tearing the engine down again to get a buddy to fix the internals. Now I'm just waiting for a few things-a hardchromed cam and rockers, 2 mini mirrors custom made, a custom flat track number board as it sits too high and a bit of external tank sealing.
