NC Equipment Regulations

I'm trying to eliminate everything I can off of the bike. I would not have a speedo if I didn't have to.

Does anyone know the specific regulations for NC on what's required/not required on an older motorcycle? Is there a specific year where the laws change if the bike is older than that model year? Mine's a 1973 CB175 and I'm curious if the same regulations apply.

I know turn signals are not required, brake light is required, headlight is required, plate is required, and helmet...but what about exhaust? I would love to run straight pipes...

Nevermind guys. Talked to the right person at the DMV...apparently if your bike is 35 years old or older, all you need is the year sticker, no inspection at all.

I think every state requires you to have a speedometer / odometer, inspection or not.

As for the straight pipes: please don't do it. The CB175 doesn't make a lot of power to begin with, and straight pipes will actually rob you of what little there is. Plus they just irritate everybody.

Good note. I just wanna get this thing on the road so bad so I was thinking about jetting open headers until I can get a 2-1 made. I've heard they run well on those...

Yup. In Indiana your bike has to be made pre-56 to be legal without speedo, minimum 1 mirror, and some other things. I forget the whole list. Your state government page should have the regulations listed somewhere. Most likely buried in the most obscure part of the site.

There aren't really a whole lot of people that follow them really anyways... Have you ever heard of someone getting a ticket for not having a speedo?.. To each his own... I personally wouldn't ride without one but frequently ride without mirrors. I always look regardless mirrors or not... Some of the rules are a little ridiculous.

Yeah, where I'm at its almost impossible to find a bike pulled over at all. Usually the bike will get away or it tragically ends in death so there really isn't much pursuit. If you aren't careless they pretty much don't care.

Here's a link to the NC regulations from the AMA website.
