"everyone has a plan…"
ok. rather innocently picked up a rolling chassis as a project for me and my kid to build his first bike. (1971 honda CL450, btw)

bought it very cheap, and very quickly -so i was quite curious as to HOW BAD it was.

first a good blow off with the the air hose...

and then onto the lift and wheel/front end off. nothing out of the ordinary... YET.

first thing we did was pull the stator cover off- thinking this would tell us immediately if it had sat at the bottom of a lake or had a family for weasels living in the bottom end.

to my GREAT relief...

the thing looks BRAND NEW! awesome. (we even fist-bumped over this...)

so with a little more confidence, we broke into the points cover....

and lo and behold-

it too looked great. good news all around.

THEN the carbs came off.

and a peak down the throats scared the holy hell out of me....

at first i thought it was rust-cicles... but after poking it, it was more gelatinous than flaky.

which in terms of the rebuild, is infinitely better-

but in terms of the pandemic that i might of just unleashed....

a LOT worse.

obviously being a little melodramatic here, but has anyone seen this? any wisdom to impart from having encountered this before?

any tips/advice will be appreciated.

thanks in advance.

(just saw this got posted to the "SUSPENSION" area of forum. not really "suspension" related, but dont know how to move without retyping everything.

apologies.)

Jellied fuel snot from carbs that have leaked old varnished fuel for a decade or two?

Obviously it's one of those newfangled motomethlabs dry it on a hot plate and you've got some grade a product id say.

In all seriousness not a clue what it is but I'd pull the head at least because if that shits in your cylinders it could be a mess

engine is coming out tonight for a full tear-down.

just wondering if we need haz-mat suits...

You should always wear a mask if your not sure. I use one when I air blow a bike off because I never know what is on it. An ounce of prevention can save you more then you will ever think

Amen. Didn't Steve McQueen die from asbestos exposure (that they attributed to blowing out old brake drums)?

Actually he died after having 2 heart attacks in 24hrs after successful surgery for Mesothelioma tumors.
"McQueen believed that asbestos used in movie sound stage insulation and race-drivers' protective suits and helmets could have been involved, but he thought it more likely that his illness was a direct result of massive exposure while removing asbestos lagging from pipes aboard a troop ship while in the Marines."

His race suits were later determined to be Nomex and had no asbestos in them.

Sleazy - if you want I can move this to the projects thread area, as it looks like the beginning of a full build document - or to the 1-800 section if you're just looking to discuss this particular problem - just let me know (shoot me a PM).
