Need some help with the wiring on my 72' XS650. I'm wondering which of the wires from the alternator goes to which of the wires from the regulator/rectifier. Also I'm using a Dyna coil. On the left-side of the coil i hooked up the red wire (power) Boyer ignitor unit and on the right-side i hooked up ground-wire from the Boyer ignitor-unit. Is this correct?
Just look at the colors of the wires going into the regulator and match them up with the same colors coming from the alternator. You will have to use your imagination a little, because the old wires are badly discolored. Still, you can see which one is the green wire and which one is the brown wire. The three white wires are interchangeable. I know, they don't look white, but at one point they were.
The brown wire looks to be the one between your thumb and forefinger. The blue wire, that has no connector on it, I think is your neutral wire. Maybe oil pressure.
In a nutshell, the brown and green wire send current to the rotor to magnetize it. Voltage is regulated by regulating how much current goes to the rotor. The Three white wires are the stator output. It's three phase output, and those three wires are interchangeable. I forget what the black wire is. Maybe reference voltage. The red wire from the regulator goes to your battery. I like to put a 20A self-resetting circuit breaker in that line, near the battery.
But I managed to burn up the Boyer ignition unit... So I'm kinda bummed about that right now. How is it if I chose to run the bike without the ignition unit? And what wires must go to the coil?
