Rose is my 77' Honda CB400F... my first bike
Well.... I went and passed my written skills test yesturday and got my temporary, went to the bank and took out a wad of cash, and am ready to make my first bike purchase. Have been looking for probably a year now and found this pretty sweet 1977 Honda CB400f Super Sport.

I wanted to see if i can get some opinions, criticisms, or anything that you think could help with my purchase experience tomorrow.... I have a few pictures for you guys to go through. THe first two pictures are the bike in its configuration with the current owner purchased it. the next two pictures are during the project, and the final four pictures are the bike in its current configuration.

The owner is going to supply the bike, original speed bubble, cafe tail, turn signals, Haynes Manual and title of course. He is asking $1,500 and i am hoping to at least talk him down to $1,400 <~~~ sound logical????

Thanks for your help everyone!

i dig it.
no problems with it right?
ive seen a mint 400f go for 5k here in california.
and if i recall and pretty rough one for about what your paying.

He says its in running condition and nothing is wrong with it..... i guess we will see when i give it a thorough going through tomorrow!

CB400F's are great bikes, are a blast to ride and and I have had several of them. Check the condition of the 4-1 exhaust carefully because OEM exhaust systems parts sell for more than you are paying for the whole bike. Make sure the cam chain is quiet and adjusts easily. The cam chain adjusters go out on these motors. Ride it through all 6 gears, check the clutch and make sure it is jetted correctly by running up to 11,000 rpm. You should have no sputtering, hesitation or flat spots in the carbs throughout the throttle. It looks like it has the 77 version of the CB400f tank (with hatch) which is less cool than the 75-76 version. Check the footpegs to see if they are 1975-6 version or the more forward and upright 77 version.

Also see if he will throw in the original parts too so you can sell them to buy a front fender, paint, new bars, headlight holders, taillight etc. I hope you are planning on removing the black motor paint. Tell him to keep the stupid helmet.

$1400 is a great price as long as it has a proper title. If not, offer him $1000 or less. Depending on where you live, titling can be a long, frustrating and expensive process.

Man, it's kind of a shame he messed with it. Looked sweet before. Now it looks like every other flat black unfinished piece of business out there. Where are you located? If he's including all the good stuff he removed, and willing to deal a bit. I'd say it's worth it. He needs to pay a dumb tax for fucking up good painted in exchange for primer.

Why is it that people think primer is soooo much better than paint anyway...? topic for another thread I suppose, haha

Yeah... talked to the guy about that and he said the original look was from decals and not paint. One of the first things i will do is give her a new paint job and maybe add back the speed bubble when i get a new seat, rear sets and modified bars.

HAHAHAHAHA..... but wouldnt I look cool when you cant see my face because of the glare off my helmet?

Good points though. It is suppose to snow tomorrow, so i might not get a test ride on this thing. Its a problem i know, but passing up a good deal is very hard.

Sounds like a great plan. The bike def needs a new home, thats for sure.

Good luck with your purchase man.

And this is exactly why we started this site over 4 years ago now :) Welcome and thanks for the kind words. Awesome choice for a bike.

The guy selling it can't tell Pops Yoshimura from Kaz Yoshima. Pops is THE Yoshimura and he did not design the bike, but his company did sell lots of great parts for it.

Kaz Yoshima ran Ontario Motor Tech and when he created his first project bike from a CB400, he did indeed call it his calling card. That article is available on line and it's inspiring.

I have to admit the original decal bike is fugly IMHO and looks like the PO at least made it a little more original but had no idea on colors.

If it runs and looks to be sound, I'd grab it and give it a good home Kiley (Kanticoy) has an amazing build you might like to check out.

Well..... I did it. I am the proud new owner of a 1977 Honda CB400f Super Sport! Everything went really well at the sale. Bike started right up cold. She definitely needs a little TLC, but we will get her looking shiny an new before too long. Ended up buying her for $1400. Guy was pretty set on the $1500 mark, but my plan to only bring $1400 with me to the sale paid off.

Thanks again for all the help guys... I am sure i will be back with lots of questions once I start pulling things apart!
