2:1 choke cables for mikuni vm's

They have a tendency of leaking, making you think you are running rich and make your bike essentially run like hot garbage. Replace them with the plunger chokes and you have a new bike. Not that i would be so silly as to use them or anything....::)

I agree. To the trash bin they go. All that I'm really mad about is the hours of chasing a 3/4 throttle stumble today i wasted....jets can't fix a leaky choke plunger.

Ok, so I have a 2004 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic. I removed the choke cable since it looked like S**T going up to the handlebar, plus I have replaced the controls since then with HD which do not have a choke local. The bike runs cold though, so when it's cold out here in MN, need to choke it. So, what I am trying to say is: Is the stock cable (mikuni carb0 adequate, or should I switch like you guys are saying?

The carbs we're yakkin about are Mikuni VM round slide carbs, usually found on 2 stroke bikes from the factory but that have come to be used on older vintage 4 strokes as well.

The 'choke' mechanism isn't really a choke per se, but rather a circuit for fuel to flow through. It doesn't operate a traditional butterfly in the air intake like a regular choke.

Originally the Mikuni VM carb has a lever that moves a plunger up and down to open or close the circuit. If there isn't a good seal, the mixture is all messed up. With the cable accessory, the plunger can be held slightly open if it's not working perfectly especially when you have a single mechanism operating 2 carbs like Kiley's cable.

Chances are your choke is a totally different etup. You should mount the choke lever somewhere else on the bike - if its just a knob you pull, there are aftermarket choke brackets you can mount to hold the cable up near the bars or somewhere convenient.
