Hey guys, just picked my first bike up last week and i'm definitely eager to show her off so here she is! Sorry about the shitty garage picture, just finished putting drag bars on (did it right, took me all fucking day to drill and route the wiring through the bars, troubleshoot, etc...) I'll post some nicer ones later this week.

Nice bike you got. Is it just me or does the bike look almost spotless?

Thanks guys. It definitely looks cleaner in pictures than it really is (as most bikes/cars do) but it's not too far off. I'm sure I'll get flak for this from the purists, but there are some mods in store for the future...most notably a lower profile seat and taillight. Nothing too extreme. Besides that, just gonna replace some old parts, do some basic maintenance/tuning up for peace of mind, and enjoy.

She's getting a new drive chain today! No more of that old, stretched out nightmare that's on there now. Also gonna try to do some mild carb syncing. I noticed that one of the cylinders produces consistently higher exhaust pressure than the other, both at idle and partial throttle.

Check the sprockets too. 99% of the time, they need to be replaced with the chain as a complete set. Worn sprockets wear out chains.

You might also want to try a compression test and give it a good service.

I am not a purest, and have cut on every bike I've owned but...
You know that bike is reeeeaaaaly big money stock right now right? and it will take some major work if you modify it and make it worth more, if ever, than it is right now.
If you plan on changing minor things that can be put back to stock easily (seat, exhaust, remove fenders) have at it... but I wouldn't cut anything and I'd box up every piece you take off.

Very clean looking bike ya got there sir, if mine was in that shape I wouldn't be cutting on it either.

New chain was installed the other day! Let me tell you, the bike seems to ride WAY smoother now, especially at 40+ mph. I thought it was a placebo effect at first, but it's way too noticeable to be that. Now that I don't have to worry about that thing snapping, I've been able to push the bike a little harder and I love it. Rides like a dream!

Teazer- I did check the sprockets and so did the shop that did the chain replacement. They are fine, though I may eventually swap them out for different sizes. I haven't even mentioned yet that this bike has 9k original miles, have I... ;D

Hoosier- the bike is worth a little more than what I paid for it, yes. But It's not as clean as it looks in the pictures. Nevertheless, I'm of the same mindset as you are. I've been careful to save everything and not make any modifications that I can't undo later. That includes not modifying parts that came on the bike, but instead buying identical used ones and working with those. The hardest part will probably be the seat. I want to make a lower profile seat with a nicer shape but keep the stock hinges and latch, so I'm in for a challenge there. I think I may buy a cheap stock seat pan and bring it closer to the frame, then pad and upholster it to my liking. The big problem with that will be working around that awkward arched frame brace...

Captmilk- thank you, though I can't say the same about the striping. It's one of the only parts of the bike I don't like. The striping creates the illusion that the tank is really small and awkwardly shaped...it's gotta go. I'm thinking a repainted CB450 or even CB200 tank.

Had one a lot like it in High school. Wish I had it now. Nice bike.
Thanks!

I'm halfway through a valve adjustment on her, though unfortunately the smallest feeler gauge I was able to get was a .038mm (.0015") so I'm just adjusting them to be very snug on the gauge (spec is .03mm). Does anybody know if this is a problem? Seems like .008 of a millimeter wouldn't make that much of a difference- this is, after all, a motorcycle engine and not a precision instrument. I'm betting even if I did get the valves to a perfect .03mm clearance, the act of tightening the lock nut would throw it off by some amount anyway...

Also, I'm planning on cleaning out the tank a bit since it's already off and drained. I've read that shaking screws/nails around inside the tank is a good way to get some of the rust off, then I might follow up with vinegar. I'm sure there's write ups on here for both of those methods, but let me know if you guys have any specific tips or feedback. Anything is appreciated!
