Always on the look out for deals on bike parts and was searching for a few replacement tanks for a couple of classic bikes I like the shape of.
Been seeing a lot of tanks selling on Ebay from India. Sounds crazy right? Who's gonna buy a hard to find tank from a guy in India??
Thing is, I used to live there o) and I know for a fact that they have the capacity to do damn near perfect reproductions of stuff like this....When I was there in 2004-2006 you could still get original BSA's, Nortons and Royal Enfields in good condition and/or fully restored. Some that guys were buying were drop dead gorgeous.
So the possibility of quality is there, just wondering if anyones bought one of these....here's link of an example of what Im talking about:

Disclaimer: I used the Benelli tank as an example only!
I had a guy locally buy one and then ask me to modify it to his liking... indirectly I told him he should support local business and just buy a tank in the style he wanted in the first place... in any case, it was okay quality for painting, wasn't all that smooth but was straight, not sure the type of steel used, but it was already rusting in the box, not too bad, but I've had steel sheet sitting in my shop for years with less rust on it
Yeah that's one of the cons to the stuff made there. They make em pretty much the same way they did originally....I've visited some of the "workshops" where they do a lot of silver plating and chrome work....it's like stepping back in time by about 70 years! Dirt floors and absolutely no sfaety anything....
Rust spotting dosen't surprise me as they are using techniques from the 40's and 50's.....AND are probablly cheaping out somewhat in the processes along the line. I stored a friends brand new enfield over the winter last year and you could tell which pieces where done properlly and which where done on the cheap side; The tank was fine, but the chrome fenders, headlight and chrome fork nuts all had spotting. Nothing a bit of CLR couldn't fix.
Anyway...just thought I'd ask around. Im for buying local as well....if I can find it, which is tough some times, specially for certain items.
If someone really wants the look of a specific tank, is it better to just buy that tank from india? (if thats where it's available) or to ask someone local to copy someone else's work?
I guess in an ideal world, everyone would have a custom-built tank that was 100% unique. I hate it when people ask me to copy another artists style, but i hate it just as bad when I loose business to one of those stock-photo websites.
Yeah... I figured there'd be some sketchy shit when ordering from India. Its pretty much the scam capital of the world, but thought that "maybe" there was some sellers that would be dealing straight up. I know there are some good items to be had if one was there in person, but again...ya gotta watch the scammers....its the national pass time!
Has anyone dealt with this particular seller. His alloy stuff looks pretty nice and his prices are reasonable I thought (until I saw the price of the tank I wanted at $825 shipped)

how is 825 shipped not reasonable?? I'm sometimes surprised that people are upset with the quality of the parts they get when, to a fault, they buy only the absolute cheapest facsimile of the part.

His other tanks were $200-$300 cheaper than this one. It could be sourced or built locally much cheaper. That's why I was asking about this particular sellers quality. If it's par with the stories I keep hearing of the other junk from India then this one is not reasonable. This one could be the absolute cheapest facsimile in quality.
