new cafe build cb450

yep 650 and 750 are different.. you say you wish you had made yours a little longer? i think it looks perfect, and if you decide to make another to your liking.. dibs on your old one!! lol but yeah currently watching a couple for sale online.. it is hard right now early in the build, but the tank is so necessary in order for me to continue with the rear tail section fab etc.. so i have to make a decision sooner than later.. that is really the only thing i didnt like about the xs400 tank is that i thought it might not be long enough.. but after seeing yours, it looks right.. and true, you have space under it for electrical etc which would be nice as well.

no big updates as of right now, just got a package in the mail yesterday from boltdepot.com with my stainless bolts i needed for the now wider hub.. was a great experience with them and the shipping was really fast. too bad i got the wrong length bolts, need another 10mm or so. so i guess i'll see how good their exchange policy is!

Yea your right about that , start with the tank and work the seat in to it,

Man I just love the wheels you sorted, looks epic :D

I may have missed it but do you have any colors in mind yet??

Cheers Wayne :)

yeah im thinking satin black with some real subtle gold accents.. the tank is going to also be satin black and im looking into some type of gold leaf accent for it. should look good.. i was going to go all black and red accents, like my 06 raven r1, but my brother has talked me into the gold idea.. guess i cant really go wrong, plus it will look good with the front forks being gold.

Nice dude ;)

Yea satin done right can look real nice , strangely satins actually highlight curves an details better than a gloss, I've painted a few things in satin an they look epic every time :D

Cheers Wayne :)

quick little update here, finally finally got my rear wheel ordered through warp 9 racing.. posting a picture to give everyone an idea of what it will look like, although the actual wheel coming is going to be black wheel, black spokes, and a gold hub. then ill take the front wheel to get powdercoated to match.

thanks man, yeah pretty fired up about having this things back as a rolling chasis.. once the wheels are done i can finish the rear suspension setup, as well as figure out what the hell im doing for a tank, and rear subframe.

Yea defo mate, once u get them bad boys on your Guna be itching to get on, 8)

Sorry but hear comes my car talk , so how wide have u gone on the rear wheel ,that's wot I'm Guna miss building my bike around the wheels, or knowing I have some nice wheels to finish it off.

Cars I buy wheels first then build round them lol

Cheers Wayne :)

i love car talk! lol.. ive gone with the 4.25" rear wheel. after speaking with warp 9 that seems to be the best way to go, and running a 150 rear tire.. anything wider in that cr500 rear swingarm they said would cause chain run on the tire... so im cool with that.. 150 in the rear and a 120 in the front. yoru cars are so sick man, love widebody sport compacts.

Nice wheels! A lot of my supermoto buddies run those warp wheels. I don't know why I haven't seen more people using them on here, but then I suppose most aren't running 17" wheels.

yeah true true.. from what ive heard they are a good company.. i always get prompt email returns and they are always interested in what im doing, which makes me feel more than a customer.. yeah im running a 17 rear and a 18 front.. they dont offer a wide 18 front so my front was purchased through buchanan using an excel hoop.. was really kinda hoping to run the matching set of excels, but the whole packaged up rear wheel through warp, bearings, seals, spacers, sprocket, brake rotor.. i couldnt really pass that up for the price. just wanna be done with the wheels so i can get the suspension locked in!

so while im waiting for the rear wheel to come in im back thinking about a tank.. really need to get one here soon. been chatting with a guy who does knee dents etc and he did a tank (pic attached) that i really like. he said he thinks it was a cb750 tank.. can anyone confirm this?

well looks like that tank is a late 70s cb550, with some mods consisting the dents on the side and top, and the gas door removed etc.. so i just picked up a ebay find for 40 bucks thats in decent shape and im gonna send it off to the guy to do the same to mine! pretty excited ive finally figured out what tank im gonna run. finally.

The modded one you showed is a cb750f tank. 76-78 I believe. Longer than the 550 tank.

I had one but the tunnel would not fit on my 450 frame. Sold it.

Trying to fit it here:
http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=9560.msg230127#msg230127

Ended up cutting the rear mount off but it still wouldn't fit down over the frame tube. The 750 frames have this weird 3 bar setup under the tank which is actually more narrow than the one big 450 tube. He said he could widen the tunnel but it would take a lot of work. We ended up just building one from scratch.

END OF LINE

In the pic, the rear mount is still there. This kind of holds it up.

We removed the rear mount and the tank went down, bet then the tunnel hit the frame tube. I don't have any pics of that.

Check out the 750 frames and you can see how the upper tube is narrower.

The one you picked up looks like a later 550 tank. I am actually putting an earlier 550 tank on mine and it fits fine.

I did have to have Junior (OldSkool) move the petcock bung aft because it hit the cylinder head. Notice how far forward the petcock is in the pic of the one you got.

ah yes yes i see. looks good.. alright phew well at least i know it will go on.. yeah i was just doing some research looking at the three bar frame style of the late cb750's.. could see how that wouldnt work.
