Just found this site, very cool so far. 8)

Well, I finally bit the bullet, and bought a motorcycle. After years of "thinking about it", it finally happened.

I've been in this guy's shop 100 times and seen this dusty/crusty old thing ('77 GL1000 Goldwing) in the corner and always wanted to ask if it was for sale...

Well, today I finally did break down and ask. He said, "yeah, we're about to move the shop next month, and I don't want to haul it across town, so make me an offer". After offering an amount so shockingly low that I thought it would get me punched in the face, he said yes. So I loaded it up and took it home. :D

He said he wasn't sure if it would run or not since how it sat was exactly how he bought it, dusty and unused. Upside of that is that it only has 36k miles, which is fairly low for a Goldwing. All the others I saw for sale were in the 50-60k range, which hopefully means I still have another 30k miles to go on this engine...

For giggles, I went ahead and replaced the battery (figured I needed to anyway), drained the old gas out and put fresh gas in. It fired up within the first 3-4 seconds of cranking, and settled into a fairly smooth idle. Revs very nice too.

All the lights work, the brakes work good, and it rides like a brand new bike. Well, like a brand new 35-year-old bike, anyway. ;D

After a really good scrubbing:

And what I want it to look like within the next month or two:

When I fired it up it sounded REALLY mean, kinda like a Harley with a proper crankshaft design. And when I looked underneath I could see why. There's holes in the bottom of the mufflers. I swung back by the shop where I got it and spoke with the guy I bought it from (he's a huge Goldwing collector) and he said, "yeah, you can't get those mufflers any more. They quit making them, but here, take this box". When I open the big heavy box I see there's a complete NOS Honda exhaust in it, from cylinder head to chrome tip. :-*

DUDE goldwings are "good for" just about as long as you can stand to ride them, I saw one once with 96k on a clock. It's basically a car engine on a bike, so 100k+ is not unreasonable. I have heard thought that the first thing you check/change is the timing belt so be on top of that, they break and they ruin engines.

There's all sorta cool shit you can do to them and all sorta aftermarket shit you can buy for them. Definitely go register and start reading at http://nakedgoldwings.com/ just a world of good information.

Cool bike bro wish I was big enough to handle one! ;) Kills me to see rides like that sit too.

Yeah, that's what I'm starting to figure out... :D

Yeah, as soon as I get the idle smoothed out (think it's some leftover bad gas), I'm going to have the local Honda shop put a new belt on it. I think I could manage it, but they quoted me a pretty good price and I trust the guy who'll be doing the job.

Yeah, been lurking there for a few weeks, but signed up here first. ;)

Yeah, I'm 6'3" 265 pounds and it's a lot of bike for me to handle. Not sure what kind of fella this big ass bike is built for. ;D

LOL lot of bike, I'm 5' 10" 155# soaking wet with all my clothes on, its all I can do to get that thing up off the kick stand. ;D

MMMMMMM SHINNY ........ said the fly right before it impacted the chrome fender. ;D

Nice score. Goldwings are big and heavy - no news there - and as such, they tend to work well with a sort of Street Rod look. Check out Randaaks (sp?) and there's a great Street tracker seat for those bikes that really transforms the look of the bike.

Welcome to the site mate. Look forward to seeng what you do with the 'Wing.

More importantly, I wanna see more of the light blue Datto in the backgroung of one of your pics...the one with the Superlites! Not sure what the model designation is in the US, but over here in Oz they are the 120Y...I used to have one as my first car! Ah Datsuns...brings back memories!

Sorry to get off-topic, but you don't see many nice examples anymore!

Around here it's called a B210. But mine has ditched it's US trim in favor of 120Y bits. ;D

As I got it (yes, the USDM bumpers are awful):

Lowered in front with the Konig Rewind wheels:

USDM bumpers go bye-bye:

the goldwing looks great for sitting so long

Yeah, I was very impressed with how it came out after a good scrubbing and polishing the shiny bits. :D

Damn shame I want to change everything on it... :p

YEAH! Another GL (Goldwing) there are a couple of us around here. I saw maritime posted about your bike and had to go search it out. I got a younger sister to her, a '81 GL1100, link in my sig.
Few things...
1st: CHANGE THOSE BELTS! these are interferance engines and if one of the timing belts break the piston slams into a valve thats open... and that is very likely with those 35 year old belts!
2nd: DO NOT CUT THAT EXHAUST! you may want something louder but if that time comes, put that hunk of gold back in the box and get a used set of 78-79 headers and put sportser take-off mufflers on her, I love the sound of mine.
3rd: With proper Maintenance 100K is very possible.
4th: Those wheels are Lesters... VERY desirable aftermarket pieces.
5th: NGWclub.com is the new addy for Nakedgoldwings.com, I'm Hoosier Daddy there as well. Also check out Randakks website for tech tips, he's an early GL1000 Guru.

Lastley... You suck! ;) See's BEAUTIFUL... very nice indeed.
So what was the obscenely low ball offer you made? Something tells me the exhaust alone is worth that much.

That's on the winter to-do list. Won't be riding it much until after that, though.

Don't necessarily want "louder", just sexier. 8)

Yeah, read it all twice before even buying the bike. That's what made me want one. ;D

Actually, you're just about spot on. 8)
