Hy all,
My name is Chris. After constantly coming across this site while looking for ideas and info, I decided I better join since I now have a project on my hands. I've had my bike for about a month but have yet to touch it do to work, but hopefully that will change pretty soon. I have yet to do any work besides give it a quick wash, and since I may have an issue I have waited on ordering parts. A little info on how I got the bike:
In early March of this year I got a phone call from my grandfather that I was going to meet in Joliet, Illinois and move down here to Arizona. He doesn't often call me, so I was surprised. He was calling to ask if I wanted the motorcycle his sister had sitting in her shed that her late husband owned. I had heard family rumors that it was an Indian, but never laid eyes on it. Since I didn't know her or her husband well, I never got nosey, but expressed interest in it. She called me in around 2008 asking if I wanted it for $100, but I was in high school and had no way to get it home, so I had to pass.
Well, on March 13th I landed at Midway airport and headed right over with the moving van so that I could get the bike before I was too rushed due to my time limit (I had a lot of stuff to pack since my grandfather didn't do any of it). Anyways, with the moving van in the driveway and me at the door, I was excited and nervous. I had no idea what the bike was or the condition, all I knew was it was there, had been sitting since the mid to late 90's, and had a clean, notarized title.
Well, when I went to the shed I was pleasantly surprised; there sat a lovely 1971 CL350 that was all mine for FREE! The bike had been in this household since 1977, and I believe in the family since new (it hopped around as a loaner and my great uncle bought it in 77, if my sources are correct). The last time plates were on it was 1979, and the last time it was on the road for a real drive was the 80's I believe. I have the key for it, title in hand, and it is now in my garage. I am really excited to work on it since it has always been in the family.
As for the issue I mentioned in the first paragraph...as I said, I have a clean, notarized title. However, the VIN on the neck of the neck and the title do not match. There is a "0" missing and of of the "6"s on the title should be a "0". It will need a class 2 or 3 inspection to be registered since the VINs do not match. Arizona checks out of state vehicles prior to regitering them...pretty much only making sure the VIN matches. Hopefully this won't be too big of a deal. On a good note, they also check out to make sure the vehicle looks correct year/make/model. Lucky for me, it seems like this CL is 100% stock except the seat (based off what little knowledge I have of these, I'm new!)
Anyways, here's a couple quick photos. If anyone knows about the title thing, let me know. So far a 3rd party DMV told me it cannot be possed, crushed...etc. Just a background check on the VIN and if nothing comes up I get a clean, corrected title. I will make a build thread if/when paperwork is OK, until that feel free to ask any questions!
