New guy with a CB125

Hi,

I am a 6.3 ft guy that recently bought a CB 125J with the following vin Number:
CB125J1005901

Why buy a CB 125?
After helping with a mini build and tinkering in general I wanted to tinker on a project of my own. Given you don't tinker on a brand spanking new CB 500 x I needed something cheap that I can work on.

BOOM. Perfect girlfriend spots a cb 125j rotting in someone's backyard. Rusted spokes, rusted fenders, rusted frame, rusted handlebars, rusted exhaust pipe and cracked exhaust outlet. No compression, but it turns over.

75 GBP (around 100 euros) is what the owner got for it, and a promise that I would get it running again. He had some great memories from that thing, but the poor soul loaned it to a few mates who absolutely destroyed it (electrics were absolutely messed up).

Ever since buying the rusted beauty, i've been lurking the forums and now that I am doing an off-frame restauration (as you'd call it in the car bizz) I decided to register myself and create a project thread sometime soon. Ask some questions too, like if I can do a carb swap without negatively impacting performance and heighten the suspension just a tiny bit.

I have no clue what year my bike's from btw. Anyone knows right off the bat with just the vin number ? It didn't come with the paperwork :)

Cool. This makes me feel better about being 6'/160 and restoring a 100. Your bike sounds great. You didn't mention the tank- did it somehow withstand the elements better than the rest of the machine? My CL's tank has been its Achilles' heel.

I can't help with your VIN, but I bet others here can. A few photos would be nice. Welcome to the forum!

The tank well.... I filled it with 1l of thinner and am now waiting to hoze it down. I dont think it's salvagable but I want to give it a go anyway!

I actually made a flickr photostream back here: https://www.flickr.com/gp/128431473@N07/tN27h4

When I create the project page I'll put up a nice little collection of photos.

Read this, it might say a little about it:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CB125

Between 1976 and 1979............

I'm 100% sure it's from 1976-1978... but the specific year: wouldn't know. Is there any marking on the frame or chassis that might give an idea?

Does your plate look like this?

There might should be a date on it.

I'm not familiar with the 125J, all the ones in the states were a 125S. That's strange that there's no date of manufacture on your VIN plate though. The 76-78 guess is correct, only years with front disc and two piece head.
