New harness question

So I have been wanting to replace my existing wiring harness with a completely new loom that I'd be putting together myself. Besides a non functioning electric starter, my electrical seems to be fine. However, since the bike is nearly 40 years old, I figured it's best just to put together a new loom with new connectors and wires all around. This would be a project I could do inside over winter. Because I didn't want to get myself into a pickle, I figured I'd purchase a used on on eBay and use it as a reference. That way I can keep the existing harness on the bike and once complete, I can just swap out new for the old. Any problems with this approach? Besides the cost of the additional eBay harness?

How much are you looking to spend?

We can always make one to your specs.

Oh sonreier, what a kind offer. However, since this is my first project, I really trying to focus on doing things myself. I feel there's no better way of learning than to take this approach.

In that case, what are your goals with the harness? Are you looking to keep everything stock or are you wanting to make some changes?

This go around, I'm making no changes, just sticking with stock setup. Later down the road, either on this bike or another, I'd probably be making changes.
The idea is to just replace all the wiring, including the connectors to those of new.

Depending on the make and model of the bike, you may not be able to use the exact same connectors, but new and different one will still get the job done if you replace the component's side as well. www.vintageconnections.com will have most (if not all) of what you need to get going.

That extremely helpful, thank you. Looks like I'll get started on finding the modeled harness needed to get started. Thanks again.
