New here - gs450l budget build

Awesome, Thanks for the info. I've actually had mine for a couple years now, got it running really well with the advice over at GSR and just this winter started modifying it. Look forward to seeing how yours turns out!

Cool man and thanks, excited to see how she turns out! I'll keep an eye on her.

Cool bike, almost bought a GS450 myself but someone beat me to it :p
Look forward to seeing more progress pics

Cool project empty! Always good to see another small GS around....

You should ask Tim to move this from the "member introduction " area to the Cafe Racers area though.

Thanks for comments guys! Really appreciate it.

Had a friend weld a riser for the gas tank. straighten out the lines a little.

Modified a shed door hinge, and attached it to my seat bolts, then thru the mounting bracket for the gas tank. Allows me access to the air box and eventually the electronics pan.

This is my inspiration for my paint. Instead of the red flake, i want gold flake mixed with green gloss painted stripes orr other way around. But anyway pretty set on green and gold flake paint job.

Really like the look with the shorties Matt. My megaphones were in too good a shape to change them yet. Opened up the baffle some on mine however.

Rearsets are really not as hard as I had dreaded and the look, ride, and comfort can't be beat with the lower bars. My only concern with sing the rear pegs as just a cruise rest for you feat would be the transition time if you run into trouble in traffic. Being able to downshift or brake quickly could make all the difference.

P.S. I think I am going to steal your tilt up seat mount idea, I've seen it before but yours has me sold.. I really would like to be able to access the battery and the fuse etc, while still having some sort of secure mount.

Gary

Lookin' good, you're side panel idea looks pretty nice too.

For your exhaust, how did you end up mounting the mufflers to the pipe? I chopped mine right at the stock muffler which leaves me with an odd -small- size header to attach to. I've got an idea of what I'm going to do but wondered what you've come up with.

Got any info on how you modded the baffles in the stock pipes?

Minor really. There are two baffles one on each side of the core from what I am told. You can simply push/beat one of the baffles over to increase flow. I left the second baffle intact at this point to keep the noise down (kinda split the difference).
I know that Alpha has opened his and actually repacked if I remember correctly. I figured this was a good option to start with and if I decide I don't like the sound or performance I may get a set of shorty megaphones from Cone MFG.

FYi,
Gary

Take any idea you please Gary, happy you like it! thought it was pretty unique idea and serves the purpose well.

With all the info on rear sets here on the forums, i feel confident to continue with my dream of making my own sets. But heres the thing, the brake controls and shortening its actions seems easy enough, but im feeling the shifter and the linkage over there might be a different story, ya know. Somehow gotta find that 20 star-looking fastener to connect some linkage too.

Thanks Jeff, heres a little preview of the side panel for ya

Well im basically at the same stage as you are as far as mufflers go. And we could quite possibly be thinking of the same idea, when dealing with the size issues.

Heres my plan, if i can find the right size ID tubing to match the OD of the header pipes (really wish they carried that OD all the way to the mufflers) i will slide it over the header pipes. Doesn't need to be to long of a peice, just enough to make sure the shorties have no wiggle when slid over it. After all that is welded up and secured nicely, cover it with some exhaust heat tape, whichever color you perfer :D It might not be the easiest was but i can shake the idea.

What do you guys think?

So you've cut your headers right before the cross-over pipe?

I'm attempting to keep my cross-over, which is that odd tiny pipe size. I went to an exhaust shop today and had them 'crimp' down some 1-3/4" OD pipe to 1-1/5" ID, still a bit loose on the OD of the tiny header pipe but close enough that a good weld will hold it no problem. This will also allow me to slightly angle the mufflers up enough to allow the side stand and center stand to fully retract.

I do still have my cross over pipe attached, has seen better days tho. Cut about an inch in front of the megafone mufflers. I was also thinking of maybe crimping, im interested to see how it turns out! Also like the angled idea on the shorties, didnt know if i was the only only :) Keep me posted

Not sure if it will help mate with ya brake linkage ::) but i changed my rear brake linkage using some original parts check out :p > cb350f 1st project agh!

Wow!! Check pictures York. And thank you for posting them here. I'm sure i will be referring back to them when i start the mounting process.

Matt,
The linkage on the shifter side is suprisingly easier than the brake side. I tied into both factory levers and linkages to retain the function of the brake switch and return spring on the brake side. I still need to clean up and spray the levers now that they have been cut. shifts easily, and the brake side feathers nicely while still being able to lock up the rear wheel.

FYI,
Gary
