Hi,

My name is Greg and I live on the Surrey - Hampshire border in a village called Bisley (world famouse for target shooting).

I came across this site whilst searching for ideas on my build.

My daily ride is a 1996 Suzuki RF 900r but as I only live 4 miles from work it is a big bike for such a short journey every day and the bike dosn't even warm up, so I decided I would keep my eyes open for something smaller that cost very little and I could leave out in all weathers and not really give a fuck about.

So as time went on my search was narrowing down to Kawasaki GT 550s, and Honda CX 500s, I don't really know why other than it became apparent that they were pretty tough bikes.

I came across a 1990 GT 550 for £300 ($453) with low mileage 28,000 miles and only 2 owners from new, I got it for £250 ($378). The bike had been sitting uncovered for 12 months and looked preety sorry for its self but I could see the potential under the cob webs and other shit that had collected on it.

I have started to chop off anything that I will not use and already the bike has started to look totaly different.

I didn't really have a plan as to where the build was heading, I thought I would let it evolve and at some point it would be apparent what was taking shape.

I now think I will end up with a Brat style Bobber.

I have finished cutting and have decided not to go to far with restoring other wise I will end up with a garage full of bits and pieces and not have the thing on the road.

I am keeping it a softtail as I am old and need a certain amount of comfort but I will probably swop the rear shocks for something a bit better looking.

I would be interested to hear from anybody who has got a GT 550 as I know very little about them.

All I know is that my mate was a courier in the 80's/early 90's in London and Manchester, he had 3 of these which he used in rotation in all weathers. Said he'd tried all sorts but the GT550 never let him down. Not much of a forum guy though, so won't be much help, sorry. At least you have something which is well-built and reliable, once you've got it on the road that is.
