New member...help with Yamaha SR250 front forks

I have been browsing this forum for quite a while now but am just getting started with my project. It is a 1981 Yamaha SR250 that I will be using as a learning project and potential land speed racer. My question has to do with the front forks. The chromed steel fork tube (the tube clamped by the triple) is rusted pretty good. I certainly don't want to pay the $200+ bucks EACH for new ones from the dealer, and I am having trouble finding used ones as this is not a very common bike. I suppose I could swap the whole front end for another model but what do I even look/measure for when looking to swap entire front ends? Or does anyone know any other bikes that would use a similar chromed fork that I could just disassemble the forks and replace the chrome part?

Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks DrJ!! I will be on the lookout for those parts. I just scanned ebay for them...didn't find anything for that year but will continue to browse. Also...not to second guess you, but I checked the part numbers on Bike Bandit and they are not the same part number for the inner tube I am looking for. Did the factory use different part numbers even though they are the same? I will also mention that I have "bicycle" type spoke wheels and drum brakes. Will this make a difference as most of the XS400's of 1981 vintage that I have seen are cast wheels with disks. Sorry for so many questions... ;)

Thanks,
Aaron

Sorry, my mistake. I looked at the middle numbers and they were the same but the first 3 numbers are different so they are not the same forks. Yes, you can use the bikebandit parts numbers to cross reference to find out if another bike has the same forks. Typically, you can swap the complete front ends from bikes that have similar years and sizes.

Hey mate
Iim new member to this site myself was actually lookin for people i could ask for parts for mine :p i had similar problems to you with my SR250 as parts are quite hard to obtain where i live. My forks were completely RS and the wheel that was on the bike when i got it was off a completely different bike plus the axle was bent about 15 degrees so i decided i had to get a new front end :)

What i did was purchase the front end off a CB250rs which is made by honda. I think i got the front end of an 80's model and basically retrofitted it to my bike. All it took was 4 2mm washers on either side of the axle and another 4 2mm (2 per bolt) washers to space the brake cylinder the same distance. After spacing the forks out 8mm i was able to fit them directly into the old sr250 triple clamp. And
voila You have a brand new front end that has disc brakes, is off a common bike and also maintains the spoked feel of the 80's. make sure u also get the master cylinder and brake cable if your going to do this.

And also if anyone out there can help me out im desperately in need of a CDI and coil + lead for my project so i can see if it runs after the countless hours i have spent on it! would pay generously as i cant find one anywhere in Australia and will pay postage also if your in another country.

Cheers.

Check out Ohio Cafe Racers website. If you decide to go with a different front end, this will tell you what could work.

G'day,

Im REALLY keen on front drum brakes - May be dangerous though... hmm

Not sure if you're keen... Well, if you manage to source a front end from a CB250RS in reasonable condition and can fit it to your bike - I will be happy to swap my 2001 SR250 front end which has disc brakes with you!

Let me know if you're keen.

Cheers,
Damo

LOL massively misread that...

You say a potential land speed racer? ... you better be forking out 500 bucks or more if you want some forks that will handle
