New Project: 1971 BMW R75/5

Been Around the Block
Found this fella outside Chicago while I have been up here working. It has been sitting in a garage for the last five years, the guy just wasn't into it. It has 13,875 original miles on it. I am taking it to my Beemer mechanic in the morning for a good look over. The tank is a reproduction and may have to go if I can find an original toaster or cut-out tank. I am going to do a soft cafe mod on it, leaving open the possibility of a full restoration. (Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, $1500) Anyway, here it is on the truck when I got it back to my friends house:

I've just never had the spark for an airhead....until the last few months......damnit!
I need more projects like i need for freeloaders.....

Nice score, what are your "Soft Cafe" plans?

Nice... always love to see another airhead!

I've always coveted the bucket on the /5's... intergrated instruments make it sleek.

What's up with the snowflake rear wheel? Don't suppose they had the orignal wire?

And check that tank carefully... if its a Heinrich then you can probably recoup enough for a replacement toaster... and it's gotta be a toaster!

That's not a snowflake wheel - that's a Lester mag which is awesome. If you decide to sell the tank, let me know - it would look good on my R75 :)

Nice alloy rear signals too - looks like you got a nice deal! Those look like newer mufflers - could be stainless (magnet should tell the tale).

Shit... can't beleive I looked at that wheel and thought snowflake... I know it's not... but I typed it anyway ::)

My mechanic is going to do a swap for me on the tank, plus a little credit towards the other repairs. He is going to swap the Lester mag for a spoke straight up. If all goes well, it will be on the road this time next week. Here is a better pic from this morning before putting it on the truck to the shop.

Just be sure you know the potential value of the tank. If you sold it on say eBay, you may get well over $1,000 for it - no joke. You should keep it and pay him whatever credit he offered you.

He's not kidding... I've seen these as $1000 add-ons from vintage dealers (and near $2000 for the 40l http://www.h-hgastanks.com/catalog/c1_p1.html) ... those are seriously desirable. I'd say the swap for a good true spoked rim and hub is probably a fair trade... the man is in business and has to make a profit on the deal but it seems close enough to be fair.

What Tim & Dan said!!! That tank could be and probably is worth some serious money, espeically with nice paint and pinstripes. A guy offered me close to grand for my toaster tank and side panels from my lwb /5.

I have put up a post on the BMW owners assoc. board to see if anyone can identify the tank. It will be off the bike on Teusday so I will be able to get a look at the bottom where there are manufacturers marks.

I have been able to identify the tank. It's an old Hein Gericke 11 gal tank made in the 1970's and is indeed worth some dough. Estimates range from 800 to 1200. Not sure what to do at this point.

Well, either sell it and buy a nice toaster tank for $200, or run the tank on the bike! I like it. Happy to trade you my nice 6 gallon black/white pin stripe tank for it ;)

It will only go up in value over time, so you might consider cleaning it really well and putting it into storage. Awesome deal on the bike :)

Oh, and kick your mechanic in the nards for trying to trade it from you for a few hours worth of labor! :) Would be great if you could find a lester front wheel for the bike, but I think they really only made those rims with disc fronts, not the drum of the earlier R75.

I know a kat who's got a *PRISTINE* pair of Morris mags for your bike. Wants a pretty penny but they are magnesium so air weighs more. As well they've never been mounted. Last I heard he was wanting $2200 for the pair.

Or go with spokes.....cuz spoke'r cool!

and will cost you a few cents less in the end hehe

The tank is not steel, at least I don't think they were. Some sort of plastic material, so it should be fine just emptied and stored.

That being said, I'd keep it on the bike - I like the way it looks. Unless I was desperate for the money, I'd keep it.

yea, I would hands down keep the tank. not only does it look awesome, but think of the range you have with it.

Just a little update. My mechanic went over the bike really well last week and has it running like new. He did about 2 grand in work, but gave me a credit of $800 for the tank swap. It is an old Hein Gericke (yes, that Hein Gericke) from the early 70's. And while the tank looked cool, it was way too big, especially since this ride is going to be for my wife. I went ahead and left it with him for another month while he does a new clutch and runs down some other parts. He didn't have a straight spoker to replace the rear with, but with the extra time should be able to run one down. It will be a straight up swap, as the Lester mag is slightly more valuable on paper (but not to me). Anyway, here she is. The rubber knee guards aren't on yet, but you get the idea.

The old tank was the dog's balls. That would have made a killer cafe + distance riding bike (an oxymoron only to lesser men like myself).

The new tank looks cool too, though.
