New project: 1978 CB750K

I am halfway new to the whole cafe scene but not new to motorcycles. I have been riding for 20 some odd years and have worked in several dealerships while learning valuable lessons along the way. I love to tinker in my second home ( the garage) and have been wanting to get back into a street bike on my college student budget. I was recently given a complete CB minus the motor, along with several boxes of parts. The photo with the gentleman on it was the first and only owner who has since passed. I am starting this thread to share my hardships and successes with others throughout this project. Maybe we can all learn a thing or two! Any help/ constructive criticism would be welcome!

I purchased a 76 super sport motor for it this past week up in Frankfort IL. Paid $275 for it and have been in the process of tearing it down and cleaning parts along the way. I didn't know till afterwards, the 76 motor has a different offset on the output shaft and the Super Sport can be kind of tricky on acquiring replacement parts. Ready to have it cleaned up and running!

Engine tear down is going smooth so far.

The work space. A little small but it works!

After some clean up, they should lap in just fine.

Well I have made progress on the build so here are some pics that should be up to date.

Trimming some fat off of the frame

The motor has been walnut blasted and re painted with John Deere muffler black. This paint is very durable and lays so well.

The crank bearing and rod bearings were shot. Luckily it didn't get into the crank so I was able to polish the journals a bit on the lathe. All of the valves were smoked and mushroomed where the keepers lay. I am working out a deal for full port work, Serdi valve job and some other goodies :)

Took some time to paint the side covers. I love the way they came out.

Also taped off the valve cover and got it painted as well.

Got the tank stripped and I am considering not using any paint. I have worked with this 3M vinyl before and it is amazing what you can pull off with some knifeless tape and a heat gun!

Thinking OD green, brushed titanium and red pinstripe for a color scheme.

Took the forks off this week and repainted the lowers. Replacing the seals and fluid while I am in there.

Looking good! John Deere Blitz Black does wonders!

Last nights project was tackling the front hub. I cut her free, repainted it and ready to order some spokes!

Looks awesome. I really like that paint. How did you get the front axel out of your hub on the front tire?

Put the speedo drive side of the axle in the vice + propane torch for some motivation on the threaded side = axle in two pieces and removed out of the side with the speedo drive.

Also, that paint is the only black I will use, hate rattle can gloss and anything that is more matte than this is to much for me. Plus, I can never get any other brand to dry as quick and thorough as this John Deere Blitz Black.

It also bares a striking resemblance to HD denim black. Which is why I like it. But I will never be able to afford one of those.

I agree. A lot of guys use the JD muffler paint on Vance and Hines heat shields as an alternative to powder coating. They say it holds up great and doesn't fade with use. I am anxious to see how well it holds the deep black hue on my cases. Even more interested in the longevity of the finish with the inevitable float bowl fuel spill.

After looking at your pictures and a few videos on youtube I have decided that I'm definitely going with the JD paint.
