If I could find one of those somewhat local, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat....the very first bike I got to ride as a little shit a long time ago ;D
Great Find!!!!

Very nice, I'd love to have one of those. One was for sale locally last year, but buddy was asking way too much for the shape it was in. Hopefully I can pick one up one day.

I'll be following your build.

I think it was $800. Problem was a lot of parts were missing and it was in bad shape. Was probably worth $200 at the most. I'll have to keep looking.

I've always loved MB5's. I was working at a Honds dealership when they first came out and we had one for running errands on. It took me 25 years to find another one. I traded a paint job on a Ducati for it. I lost my ass on the deal, but I got an MB. It was really thrashed, but complete. I spent a whole winter restoring it, smoothing the frame and swing arm, repainted it, lower bars, trimmed rear fender, removed the turn signals, recovered the seat, and added slightly larger tires. It ran great, even though it hadn't been started in years. I rode it with the stock engine for a season, then got a wild hair to put a CR80 engine in it. I also used the CR's rear shocks and stock exhaust that was cut into 5 pcs. twisted, and re-welded together to go under the engine instead of over the top of the head. It worked, but don't let anyone tell you it's "a bolt-in". It needed all new motor mounts fabbed, and the footpegs need to be altered, too. Plus, it's really hard to ride in town due to it's race engine power band. But..it does get to 50 a lot quicker now... ;D

I had one of these when I was 16 but I couldn't find parts. I think its still at my parents house maybe I should check it out. probably very rough shape.
Now that there is Ebay it might be fixable.

Had a brand new one when I needed a way to work in Tuscon. Would love another. Yours is looking great with the 80 motor! Great job.

Yeah Ebay has been a super help on the rebuild, as well as bikebandit, I should get a slew of parts in this week and start putting the engine back together. Also need some advice on painting, I have rattle can engine paint to redo the top header and the exaust, do I need a primer for that or just a good clean sanded surface?

The primer won't hold up to the heat of the exhaust header. I took mine down with some 180 grit and just used VHT brand very-high temp exhaust black. It's held up great.

Great to see the MB5 here! Back in my roadrace days they were all over the pits for pitbike work and impromptu races.Awesome little bikes, they put a grin on my face. :)

wow, thats an amazing transformation. red to black and mt? wheels, amazing. I was bidding on the side cover your missing as well on ebay and it went for an outrageous amount.

Last week I got a gasket set in the mail and that allowed me to fully rebuild the top half of the engine.

before peicing it all together i pained it up nice with the rattle can engine paint, and holy shit does that stuff do what it says. With all the rattlecan tips on here I made it look pretty nice.

put it all together last night, put fluids in, and brought it downstairs with some help.

hopefully tonight i'll charge the battery and start it up.

Wow, I never knew that Honda MB-5 or 8 where sold in the States.
Here in Holland there are where a lot of them on the road.
Had a white one and later I had a MBX. (still miss them :-\ )

But here in Holland the bikes and the parts are easy to get and are not so expensive.
I'll give you an example:
