Hey,
The bike is a 75 xs500.
I cleaning up the handle bars so i am running some toggle switches and a new push button starter under my seat.
From a local automotive store i bought a push buttom. it has two screws on the back for wires to connect. When i took apart the original switch on the handle bars, there is just one wire to it ( a blue and white one). I hook that up to the button and it doesnt work on either pull. Is there another wire i should run the to other screw?
I have power, my headlight turns on.
I;m struggling here haha,
any help is appreciated

Any chance that a cable came loose when you got the controls off?

Just doing something similar on a CB550. Had to unthread all the cables from the controls through the bars. In the process of doing that one of the wires to the push button came out. Fortunately it was clear what had come away.

I've decided to do the same thing and have a push button, but I am mounting it on a plate attached to the top of the triple tree, using the original screw holes that the bars were fixed down to.

I've tried to start it since and nothing. Looked through and when I took off the headlight all the cables were in the back and are worse for wear. The Clutch microsensor cable had come unattached with the moving. This wasn't a problem I though as the bike is in neutral so doesn't need the clutch depressing to start. Turns out the starter button grounds through the clutch switch. is there internal wiring in the control that provides the circuit?

Have you been able to check a wiring diagram, that will give you the definitive, but that starter button must complete a circuit somehow, so it probably needs to ground itself, either through another component or straight through.

Run a wire from the other terminal to ground. I bet it will work.

Most older bikes had similar wiring. Usually the starter button just grounded the switching wire from the starter solenoid to the handlebars when you pressed it.

yea, i havnt got back to it. put it on hold until i put the bike together. but ive been thinking of it, and i did check the wiring diagram and i think i'll just try and ground it and see what happens

thanks guys, i'll let you know if it works
