New to dirt bikes...

Been Around the Block
So I have been wanting to get a dirt bike for some time now and came across a 1982 honda xr250r for sale locally with 16,000 miles on it. He is asking $1200 OBO. It is titled and he says it runs/rides great. I have never ridden dirt before...only street. I'm thinking a 250 is a good start for a noob in the dirt world. I was wondering if any of you had any advice/knowledge on these bikes? From what I have researched they seem to be a solid bike...especially for someone new to dirt riding. Any info would be great...thanks again!

the 1982 xr250r is an overweight, heavy underpowerd pig, get something different
besides 16,000 miles is an awful lot for a dirtbike
did i mention its heavy and slo ?

So its a fat pig huh? He also has a super clean 1987 kawasaki f100 with 2200 miles on it. Asking $1000 OBO. I guess I am looking not to spend a bunch $$$ and I don't really want something with a bunch a power for my first go around with dirt bikes. Thanks for the info XB!

By todays standards, most old dirt bikes are heavy and slow. If you're wanting to ride fast, you can find newer lighter dirt bikes fairly cheap. If you're looking for something to trail ride and just cruise around on, the older bikes are fine, most 250's will get you in enough trouble. How are your knees and back??? I don't know about you, but I grew up on dirt bikes, but in my 50's, personally I can't do it any more. But if I was to go back, I'd love and old Honda or a Yamaha DT. They were capable bikes of the time and will get you around enough to have fun. If you want to race Baja or jump 70' in the air, start looking for newer bikes with much better suspension.

South Carolina...I'm 5-10 200lbs. I know they are both small bikes, but for the type of riding we have around here...Im looking for something small that I can throw around easily. I just want to cruise...no jumps...nothing too technical.

well get a 200 or 250 lots of good bikes in the 1000 doller range but not an 82 xr250 an 86 xr250 yes

just a lot better suspension and engine, less weight as well, way better handling
the 82 was the first year for the single shock

Echoing what ApriliaBill said, it's much more physically demanding than riding a street bike. You'll certainly be feeling it in your knees and legs because you'll either be spending a lot of the time on the pegs, or on the ground. Of course it depends in what kind of terrain you'll be riding in/on.

ive got a 85 XL250R heavy yes but still mono's, roosts dirt and climbs hills like a mountain goat!

most trusty bike i have!

Good on you, for gettin' dirty. 8)

I can't imagine learning to ride on the street, then going dirt. It is so much less stressful to learn riding dynamics on the dirt, without two ton steel beasts trying to squish you. ;)

Plus you get to learn how a bike acts in low-traction situations at a slow speed, and can learn the muscle-memory to deal with them.

I think a 250 or a 125 two-stroke would be an ideal choice. ;D

a 125 2 stroke mx bike is the worst bike you could get unless you are racing, and weigh 140 lbs
a 250 2 stroke mx bike is the 2nd worst choice unless you are racing
get a trailbike like a kdx kawasaki or an IT yamaha xt tt yamaha
xr xl honda or a dr suzuki
race bikes are for racing

Best advice here so far is to go with a kdx. A yamaha wr would be a good choice also. Those two have good suspensions and a little smoother power delivery for a two stroke. Newer wr's are 4 bangers now.
if you do go with an mx bike go with a 2000ish yz 125 or 250. Both have a pretty easy power delivery with decent torque at the bottom end. Oh and have fun.

I didn't say anything about MX bikes. ::) I was thinking 250 four-stroke, or 125 two-stroke vintage dirt/enduro bikes. 8)
I tend to forget about everything made after 1979 when I am on this site. LOL ;D
Sorry for the confusion. :-[

TT 600 is just like a potato= overall use.
And if you want to have a blast go yz 490,cr 500 or a kx 500.(these demand experience tho) ;D
