New to me GR650X Tempter

Been awhile so here goes ......
My auto shop has been slammed so motorcycle time has been neglected.
I have however gotten ......
New to me instrument cluster
fuse box
turn signal relay
tach cable
throttle cable
choke cable
ignition switch with key
turn signals
mirrors
painted my side pods.
Still waiting for my gas tank to come back from my fabricator so I can replace the petcock valve and fuel level sending unit and then paint it.

Been away for awhile.
Got it all back together and been riding it all summer.
Its a wee sketchy at hwy speeds, not sure I like that .
Resealed and oiled the forks .
Front tire is out of round so need to replace both tires with standard street tires.
One thing I noticed is that when it cols outside in the morning my cluster makes a howling screaching noise till I stop.
What up with that.?

Oh quick other Q's .
Bike is way to quiet in my opinion .
Any down sides to taking the baffles out of the pipes ?
Will the lack of back pressure screw it up , performance wise ?

As far as it being sketchy at speeds - new tires will probably cure that. But make sure the front suspension is dialed in properly too. Old springs, uneven air levels (if you don't have the "X" forks), etc can cause problems too.

That noise from the cluster could be caused from a dry speedo or tach cable (you should be able to figure which). Try lubing the cables, but if that doesn't work than I'm out of ideas. I know you should oil up the instrument cluster itself.....

You won't lose any noticeable performance from cutting out the baffles. There are 3-4 plates inside the mufflers along with a canister with a bunch of holes in it. Leave the plates (they are further towards the front anyway). Just drilling some holes around the canister should make it considerably louder.

Glad to hear you've been putting some miles on it, man!

Thanx for the info Rich.
Front suspension is dialed and tire pressure is proper - gotta be the outta round front tire then.

I put a newer speedo cable in and when I did that I lubed it . Didn't lube the tach cable though and I dont know how to lube the cluster .

When you say drill holes around the canister , do you mean , when looking at the muffler from the end of the tail pipe , drilling holes around the outlet hole of the tail pipe ?

Yeah, holes around the visible one in the muffler. Start with four holes, about 1/4" each and go from there.

Do you have the original bar end weights? They do a pretty good job of damping hand vibrations.

No I have moto X bars on there .
Getting new tires tomorrow to replace the enduro tires that came with it.

$59 front $69 rear
Rich , I may need a front wheel if that doesnt fix my issue .
Know of any ?
Wish I didnt have spoked wheels .

Sonic , those round signs you got for sale on your page are killer . Price is good as well at $45.
Whats shipping to Bend Oregon and can you do this ?
I know its not round but you could put it in the middle or something ?

Went with 4 3/8th holes in each muffler and sounds just raspy enough now.
These bikes are so damn quiet stock ....
Loud Pipes ya know ;)
Still considering cutting out the center bar in the middle of the moto bars on the bike .

I have a couple front wheels kicking around (spoked and mag). The front wheel on a GR is an easy one to replace, since it was used on SO many different bikes. Your spoke wheel is actually more desirable to some people because of the alloy rim. But if you're looked for a different one, let me know.

You said the tire is out of round......is the tire messed up or is it the rim?

Had the tire / wheel checked and 1 said ... wheel , the other said .. tire.
Tire guy is my "mech" and he said if new tires dont fix it , he will restring it for free . I figured that was good incentive.
Well that and the fact that the tires on it , the ones that came with it , are knobby enduro tires and I dont off rd .
You have a set of mags ?

Front and rear, yes. I can't say with certainty that I have a front brake rotor, but you could use your own if need be.
