New to the World and needing ideas for my 360 CL

hey everyone

i'm 19 y/o and new to the motorcycle world and i'm looking for any ideas, tips and tricks to get me started.
i've worked mainly on cars so i know my way around an engine but motorcycles are new to me.

the other day i did some work for an old farmer and as payment he gave me a 1974 Honda 360 CL.
its been sitting in a field on its side for the better part of a decade but believe it or not i took it home, put a battery and some gas in it and it started right up!

it doesn't run great by any means. it doesn't idle on its own so i have to give it a little throttle to keep it running.

it is missing the mufflers, the headlight doesn't work and there's a little bit of rust EVERYWHERE on this bike.

i have now stripped the bike, cleaned it the best i can for now.....i want to get it running smoothly before i strip it down and totally repaint it.

i plan on just painting it flat black, keeping the straight pipes if possible and making it into almost a Mad Max style rat bike.

Any ideas on tuning the carbs, painting, electrical or mechanical work are more than welcome cause this bike could use them.

Thanks

Nice score! Got any pics?

The manual is a good place to start. Here's a thread that will steer you in the right direction...

Nice starting bike, basically the same as mine but yours has the CL high pipes. Here is my intro and u can see my bike http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=3631.msg29351#msg29351 it is a little different now... got a front fender on it (cut down and flat black of course) and both mirrors on it now, trying to stay joe legal haha. Like you, this was my first motorcycle. DL the manual someone above me linked, if it is the one I have, it should tell you all you need. These Honda's are beasts I dont think you can kill the motor. They are cold blooded, but once it is warmed up, they run great.

These bikes are LOUD, I have some cheapy mufflers on the bike and if I get on it I can be heard 2-3 blocks away.

If this is your first time riding a bike I would recommend taking the Motorcycle Safety Course. I taught myself to ride and have been riding for about 2 months (with a permit of course), and I took the class and it taught me so much more, made me feel a lot safer and more in control on a bike.

EDIT: Oh snap, looked at my thread I linked u and I even have some brand new meaty avon roadriders on my bike and boy do they make my bike look slick. I should just post another thread with my new updated bike.

yep...lookin at your bike
thats about all i want to do with mine for now

i do plan on chopping the rear fender and totally removing the front one.
lowering the seat and adding some rear sets.

the problem i have with adding the rear sets is that the old farmer that had it, broke the shifter and welded it straight onto the shaft going into the transmission. :'(

i would like to keep the straight pipes and i've heard i will probably need new carb jets, Any idea where i could get some the right size
or is it a trial and error sort of thing?

hey biker! my ride is the sister of yours, the CB360. does yours have the 6spd gearbox? since you have a scrambler, i would so say go "flat tracker." you ever see the roland sands board tracker? that thing is insane!

"My ride is the sister of yours" = "My ride is your sister" :)

LoL

i have no idea if its a 6 speed, i've driven it maybe 100 yards since i got it and its been sitting in my garage ever since.
since its a CL 360 scrambler, i think its a 5 speed.

i'm still researching ideas on what to turn it into, flat-tracker, cafe racer, whatever....

I could be wrong but I thought all 360s were 6 speeds and all 350s were 5 speeds. Easy to tell, just look on your case by your shift lever and it will tell u (atleast it does on my cb360t).

yep...its 6

i never drove it far enough to engage 6th gear :p

i just printed off the whole shop manual.....all 173 pages.......my boss is gonna be pissed ;D

Little bit of trivia on the CB360... there was a kick only, 5 speed version called the CJ360

carry on

Oh, and good luck with yours... love mine.
