"Against All Odds".
so last night my father got back from Oklahoma. He was helping his brother (my Uncle) shovel snow for commericial lots and i guess getting paid like a shit ton of money...
anyways, my dad knows i have a fasination with Honda Motorcycles, so my uncle had an old cm400, 1980, just sittin outside rustin away and my dad picked it up for 100 bucks.

Now fer the funny part... i tryed to take the exhaust off to see if it would clamp to my cb350 headers:
BAD IDEA!!! this thing had been outside since 1986 through SEVERAL winters and rainy seasons...

I guess the WHOLE pipe was rotted out because when i went to take it off.. ERRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK and snap...

You could slowly part out the CM while you're working on your current scoot, make some of the money back. Just throw some shit up on ebay and/or craigslist and let it go, hell man it's money in your pocket. I'm always blown away by the prices people are paying for "old shit" guys like us are ready to just pull off our bikes and throw away.

I guess what I'm sayin' is, why wait to part it out?

hmmm.. i guess.

are you saying sell stuff "dirt cheap"?

yeah he's got a point even though the exhaust broke off because of the rust someone might be looking for the down pipe. good idea to part out give you some extra cash for your other build

Is there a title? If so, get it running ok, throw some cheap aftermarket mufflers on it and ride it while you work on your 350. Leave it rusty and dirty, but get used to riding on the street. Just make sure to hang a for sale sign from it... You never know whos looking for a running bike.

These bikes should be easy to get running. As long as the CDI and Reg/rec and coils are ok. There is no points or timing issues to worry about, cam chain is easy to tighten, valve adjustment is a breeze. Clean carbs and the pipe that broke has no baffles in it, they are hollow, the muffler is the piece of cast iron hanging under the motor. That contains your baffels and a crossover between the 2 sides. So you can just stick some pipe to have the exhaust go beind you.

Cheers,

wow i did not know that.... the problem is...i bet the engine is crap... it sat outside forever...and GOD only knows whats been living inside of it.

Well the carbs, and electronics are what are worth money on the bike. The other parts won't get you very much. What year is this? Pull the plugs and put a battery on the starter if it doesn't have a kicker and see if it will turn over, if so it will likely run, may burn some oil etc. but you could ride it with safe tires. The motrs are actually pretty tough. I got hold of one that sat in the yard for 10 years and just took some cleaning, new oil and filter and fired up and ran no issues. Even had 120 PSI cold compression. Never checked it after I got it running. One thing you would need to do from the looks of it is go through the wiring harness and clean every connector, and the fuse holder clips. When I got mine, half the lights didn't work and it randomly would stop running. it was all do to green corrosion on the wiring in various places. I unplugged every connector on the wire harness and pulled the pins out and sanded them with emery cloth until shiny again and then used dielectric grease to prevent new green rust. Bike now has every light working and runs great. It took a whole day and a case of beer to get it done but it was winter and what else was I going to do :) It looks fairly complete and may just need elbow grease and fresh plugs, gas and oil to be a runner again, and tires if they are old.

its a 1980.
My uncle got it...and suprisingly enough...he bought it from peoria illinois which is really close to me...
The tires are rotted almost...they have full tread but are cracking and gross... the
Whole headlight case is shattered...so i can throw a cheap 7 dollar can on this thing..

the seat just needs stitched back together...

The throtle wont turn...so i think the lines need to be replaced...or the carbs are locked up that bad...
The fluids probably all need changed...but ill check later.. Ill start a build thread after i finish my cb350 cafe racer... (Link on my signiture.)

Thanks for the help guys! Hope i can get some dough on this thing.
