Newb, first bike

Hey guys,

I'm Jonny and I am now an addict.

I bought my '81 Suzuki GS450L a few weeks ago and am hooked.

I work in the maritime industry and move around a lot so it hasn't been much of an option to have a bike, let alone have a project. But, since I've taken a job in Milwaukee that will keep me here for a while with a great schedule and a nice workshop I figured, "Why not get one...c'mon...you've always wanted one!"

I'm a sponge for information, and since I'm new to the whole motorcycle thing (builds, maintenance, culture) I hope to do a lot of learning here, in the garage, and on the road, but would love to hear from all of you here. If you have any advise or "rookie 10 commandments" or anything, I'd be happy to hear it.

What I want from my bike is what I want from most things in life...capability and versatility without being hard on the eyes.
I may not have picked the very best platform to build my dream machine on, but then I don't intend on this being the only motorcycle I'll ever own. I love the cafe racer style, but have always wanted a dual sport/adventure bike, so, somewhere in between (but for practicality, probably closer to the former) is what I'm shooting for...a slick little she-devil that I can tear off across the land with, taking (at times) the road less traveled.

Hope to see you all out there!

Welcome to the site man!

For your "10 commandments", I highly recommend looking over on the GSResources. A member by the name Basscliff has an awesome little site with all sorts of info, and another member (Nessism? ) has a thread there called something like "top 10 tips for new owners".

Normally new owners can be treated a little harshly for modifying a bike over there, but not too many complain about cutting up an "L" model for some reason.......

Welcome to the GS clan, and +1 on what Big Rich says about GS resources being a wealth of knowledge. I have found that as of lately it is more tolerant. Get some pictures up!!!!!
