Hey all, I was given this link from one of the guys from caferacer.com He said I need to join this forum 'cause it's where dipshits like me hang out! Should I have been offended? Then I thought, "Maybe I am a dipshit." So, I checked this site out and thought it was pretty dang swell, went back to insult the guy, but thanked him anyway for the link. Really, I'm an OK dude and get along with almost anyone. I just had the gall to voice an innocuous opinion over at caferacer. Can you imagine the cajones on me to dare such a thing???

Anyway, I'm building my first cafe out of a '79 CB750 and am in the rolling chassis stage. I started thinking about building a cafe bike about three years ago, and last Sept., I finally bought a donor. So, yeah, I'm a newby and am really getting into the build after a period of self doubt. I've been riding sport bikes for 14 years now and have owned a couple of GSXRs a ZX9R and a couple of Buell XB12Rs. I'm a bit of a bike nut...

If you are referring to caferacer.net, don't feel too bad, most of those guys are know it all a-holes and like to pick on anybody new or anyone who uses clubmans. This board is much, MUCH better.

I know, I was just responding to an OP asking how to do the mod. I told him to watch this youtube vid. Some other member didn't like that. Then, all I said was that I liked knee pockets, made some for my tank and added that I thought it looked authentic. The mod beat me up for it. Then I said it's the OPs bike, time and money. He can do whatever he wants to it. Then the shit storm started! HA!

My project so far... Rolling chassis but will disassemble one more time, I hope.

I've been trying to polish the case covers for several weeks now, but the weather is not cooperating with me

i love this place, you will learn to love it more too! none of that elitist bullshit here. from the beginner like myself to the seasoned pros like Mysta2 we all love bikes and understand everyone has their own taste! welcome to the boards!

Reject,

Welcome! You won't find that kind of attitude here. Some good natured digs now and then but no jerks. Lot's of good information and support for newbies to experts.

BTW where are you in Hoosier land? I spent my misspent youth in Lafayette myself!!!

Thanks, fellow gear heads! I'm from Evansville. It's not too bad of an area with some decent twisty roads, clover leafs, and a couple of highway spurs that allow for some high speed fun, not that I ever exceed the posted limit. ;)

Ha Ha Ha...I'll have to check that thread out as I'm a member of both boards and I like both boards and the members.
I have gotten many great ideas and advice from both for my projects,so the way I figure it the more of these Cafe style bike sites out there the better. Anytime you have a subject as passionate as say, bikes, guns, cars, trucks or anything else your going to find different individuals and or groups that have different opinions and feelings.

Sometimes you have to stick to your guns(no pun intended) and say "That's a good idea, but it's MY motorcycle and I want to do it THIS way".Look very ,very few members on this or that board own or ride what some purist would even call a TRUE Cafe Motorcycle. Nearly all of us have FAKES and as such I call them "Cafe Style" or "Cafe Styled" motorcycles. Both of these boards and members would get ridiculed and slammed on some other boards for NOT have a TRUE Cafe motorcycle even though 99.99% of the people that DO own them don't live up to the real Cafe Racer life style. They are ENTHUSIAST that just happen to own a "TRUE" and "Proper" machine and there is nothing wrong with that, but most are not "One Percenters" they don't "Live the Life" etc.. So guess what THOSE people get slammed for being Wannbes and Posers by the One Percenters and the real deal live to ride crowd. So you see,you must keep everything in context when talking about this style or that style of motorcycle you just happen to like, own, enjoy etc.. 8)

So lets all get real for a second and look at it this way we,for all intents and purposes we are all like the Civil War,Indian Wars,WWII,renaissance fair etc. re-enactors that dress up and go out and play a role of soldier/warrior for a while for the sake of nostalgia, history or to just catch a glimpse, even if for a brief moment of what it was like in a bygone era when things weren't so civil, predictable or calm.

BTW I am a fellow, born and raised Hoosier as well. I live in a little town Northwest of Bloomington called Gosport.
If you ever around this way and I'm going to be home you any of the members here are welcome to stop by and chat a while and check out all the projects I have but haven't completed yet! ;D...... :-[....... :(..... :'(

The shit storm was all over how to hammer knee pockets in a gas tank, not exactly spelling the end of the freakin' world, is it??? I'm guessing not all these guys that jumped in build true racers that are actually raced, though a couple of them did. The guy that started the namecalling is a moderator who revealed that fact towards the end of the thread. One guy did suggest that the forum be renamed something like periodcorrectvintagecaferacers.com I strongly agree. Oh, well...

No...no it is not. ;D

Hopefully I'll be doing a little more riding trips this Summer and will try to make it down to around the Evansville area sometime.
I would like to to do rides along the Ohio river and see parts of the state I've never seen before.

What exactly IS period correct for a cafe racer? I mean, have they not continued on in some form or fashion since the early 50's? And if they are being "period correct" why are they not all riding Norton featherbeds?

That's what I'm sayin'! They're (caferacer.com) trying to set a standard for a style of bike that is open to interpretation. As far as I could find, the cafe bike was a race replica of sorts, made to look like the Grand Prix racers of the time. The basic look was stripped down, clip-ons OR clubman bars, mods to the seat and maybe tank, and mods to the exhaust. The make of bike as time went on, could be anything; Brit, German, Japanese, etc. Am I not correct? What do you call someone who fancies himself a purist in a style that has really just a minimum of standards? Seriously, there has to be a word for that! Delusional, maybe? I don't know...
