Newb needs help with stripped drain plug

Rose is my 77' Honda CB400F... my first bike
Bought a 1977 Honda Cb400f super sport last weekend and have finally gotten to taking a close look at it. First thing was to get the old oil out from winter storage and pop a new oil filter in. Right away we had a problem...

The oil plug (12mmx1.5) was stripped, but after some careful wrenching i got it out. Picked up new (12mmx1.5) plug from Napa, but she is a little too small from the old bolt tearing things up. Called up Napa and they cant even find an order number for a oversize "self-tapping" 12mmx1.5 plug, so i have turned here.

Any suggestions on what i should do? THis is my first bike, never worked on a bike, but i do have alot of great resources like this website to help me through. I have replaced the old oil filter and snapped a few pictures...
I tried to find a oversized self tapping replacement online, but i cant seem to type in the right words to get what i need. What should i do?

THe parts picture shows old stuff on right and new stuff i picked up at Napa that doesnt fit. Catches thread until the very end where it just spins...

I'd try some teflon tape on the bolt 1st. Might help it bite. But the actual fix would be to Re-tap with a tap, not a "self-tapping" bolt. Your going to need to move up in bolt size. Use plenty of grease on your tap and it will catch most of the cuttings.

just called Napa and they do have a tap. Just guessing, but will i then need to go up to a 13mm plug?

In the link that you showed, I would lean more toward their part number 1048. It self taps and you do not remove it anymore, you use the little piggyback plug instead. I have used this type before and they work great, you could even put some JB weld on the outer one to really seal it. There are many ways to go, you could retap it larger, even SAE, you could use Heli coil, or there is a part called Keen-sert. If you retap or even self tap you may want to use grease like Louie said, to keep shavings out, then clean good and seal. I have used all of these methods, I used to have an Indy shop and saw all kinds.

well.... after three trips to Napa i grabbed a oversized 12mm x 1.75 plug, i know wrong thread size, but it worked!!!!

Plug went in very nice actually!

Thanks for your help!

ps... i am going to post a video in another thread to see if you guys hear anything wrong with my bike...
