Newbie in Brooklyn and a CL175

Hey all, Ive been absorbing this site for a while getting ready for my first bike. Just picked up a 1971 CL175 that---sort of works. I have zero motorcycle, engine or electrical experience and Im hoping I didnt get myself over my head. Im a bicycle dude (messengered in Boston for years) and always thought motors were for old guys. I turn 30 in a few weeks....

Ha!

Thanks, Im stoked to ride!

The bike is a little rough but not crazy it was running ok when I bought it but then couldnt maintain idle at all the next day. It ran with the choke off but not on and was revving like crazy on its own(and tach cable is broken...). The throttle cable moves freely.

Opened up the carbs and one of the floats was full of liquid and two were patched. Cleaned the carbs but previous owner had recently done so and installed new jet kit. Waiting on new floats and valves (and fuel filters) to see if that gets her running right!

Front brake works for shit. Went to look for new pads but found at least three different versions said to be for my bike but have read that there are variations, do I have to look at my current ones to know?

How similar is this bike to the CB175? Is it JUST pipes and gearing and tank? Tons of listings for OEM CB parts but not so much for CL.

Previous owner was trying to run pods but he got the wrong size and looks like you need to fab a elbow to get em on. Would pods work well on this bike? Ive been planning on running the stock airboxes because I hear they work better, but If thats the case, why do all the race bike builds (for actual racing) use pods??? The airbox is missing one of the covers, is that necessary?

Right now Im just trying to get it going and stopping, but the previous owner was trying to turn it into this: http://caferacerspecial.blogspot.com/2011/07/honda-cb175-cafe-racer-1973.html

That bike was a model from glass from the past and mine came with the seatpan and belly pan from glass from the past. So some day it will look kinda like that but a nasty brooklyn rookie version.
