Been Around the Block
Hi,been hanging around various forums for years dreaming about my own project but never seem to have got around to it. Not anymore! Informed by a work colleague about an ageing Honda tucked away in his mothers garage that I could aquire for very little. So off I went all excited and full of dreams of CB550's etc and I found this:

Oh well you can't win them all!Anyway as I am a sucker for lost causes and strays I could'nt resist taking it home with me.
They don't seem to be well loved generally but I am going to see what I can do...........
Excellent forum by the way. :)

If you're that disappointed, I'll take it off your hands. :D
When I got it home and cleaned it up I kinda got into it, nearly thought about running it stock......naa!

Got cracking instead! ;D

I have never that model before - and for a find, it sure is clean. I like the lines on the tank - would make a nice cafe tank.
What year is it? and does it run?

Again - Great "find"! and Good luck!

Hi, it's a cbx550 1983. Successor to the cb's I think. It was a bit of a failure I think as Honda put some quirky stuff on them like inboard brakes which were'nt very good!
I also love the tank and pretty sure I will keep it on there, the rest is going to be as cafe as I can get with a small budget.

Sorry forgot to say that it's not running yet, previous owner put it away after the fuel tap leaked and sadly passed away shortly afterwards before he got around to fixing it, so I am hoping that a bit of fuel and power and it will go.Fingers crossed. ;)

Nice find man! That has LOTS of potential man. I really like the lines of that tank. Keep us updated on your build! :)

For this photo I raised the rear of the tank by about 1" off it's mount to see what it would look like and I think it's good so I will probably go with the build around this tank. It does have pretty good lines for a cafe racer base.

Ohhh, man, that looks *tits*.
Kudos! Looking forward to seeing this get The Treatment, as it were. :D

Thanks I think!
Thinking of keeping the wheels and having them painted black on the spoke area and rim in the original alloy. Has anyone seen this type of wheel painted or have any pictures of them on other bikes?

Looks like they might be some kind of alloy, I wouldn't imagine a wheel like that being made of steel.

The trouble with painting aluminum alloys is that paint doesn't like to stick very well to aluminum if you don't first etch it in highly diluted hydrochloric acid, which will probably make the rim surface unsafe to mount a tire to without risking explosions complete with shrapnel.

Powdercoating is a good option, and it can also be anodized.

If it were me, I'd almost do the wheels in white, because it'd *really* stick out against a black roadsurface.

The tank is sick. Definitely keep that as is. The bike will look really great around that. Hopefully you can get it running … that's the most important part.

Can't wait to see where this things goes. Cool find, even though it's not exactly what you wanted, I think you'll probably learn to love it.

Dude that is such an awesome bike. The tank and wheels are bitchin! Can't wait to see what becomes of it, congrats man.

Wahoo!Cleaned plugs, bled carbs, battery on. Brmmmm...first stab of the button! Not bad after 8 years idle.Running sweet to. :)
