I sold my CB400 a few months back because I was moving out of state, Job fell through and now I am looking for my next project. I found an 82 GS550 project locally. It's not a runner (starter issue,no kicker). It's all there but carbs are off. The guy wants $600 and I think that's about twice what it's worth. What do yall think?
$600 sounds kind of steep for an 82 gs that you cant even crank..
i know there was a guy selling one local to me with a big bore kit and a bunch of off the wall parts as a roller for $500.. which seemed reasonable just for the amount of parts he had with it..
i picked up my 78gs1000e for $200, not running of course, but we were able to crank the bike over to make sure it had compression..
I will often pay more than what something is "worth" when that item is exactly or near exactly what I am looking for. I also consider these questions: Is it readily available elsewhere? Is it worth my time to chase another one down? Does the convenience of here-and-now out-weigh the additional cost? After you ask yourself those, remember that you can save money down the road on items that are easier to source. That said, I am in no way suggesting that you buy an overpriced 82 GS750!
Offer him what you think its worth, but I bet you can find a better deal and a better platform if you wait it out. I picked up 2 non-running 72 CB750s for only a hundred more then that, and I live in an area where bikes are a lot less common than elsewhere in Canada/America. If you can't get it for $350, pass it up...
...but thats just my .02, any project bought for under a grand amd fixed up could potentially be worth it if you end up with a really awesome finished product.
K...That worked! Here's the story. Bike was last registered in 93 so I will bring it out of hibernation slowly. A little ATF in the cylinders and new filter and oil. I got Pine-sol to soak the carbs and new starter brushes ordered. I had a superbike bar on the CB but I may go with clubmans on this one. Doing a full badge delete and paint. The seat is perfect so it stays for now. Case guards will stay but highway pegs..no. MTF!
it actually doesnt look to be in bad shape.. that thing will be up and running in no time.. my gs was faaaaar worse and i had it running(rough albeit, but running none the less) a couple days after i got it home.
Bad News! Engine is frozen and I am looking at a full rebuild.
Good News! I am picking up a Katana 600 engine with Yosh pipe and carbs already jetted to it. Has complete wiring harness and a couple of boxes of parts. Pix tomorrow!
I would re-build the stock engine with a 700cc conversion and some 'work' 8)
Built a 165~170 mph one in 82 or 83, forget exactly when 8)
Katana motor will be more reliable though and make around 70bhp with correct carbs, jetting, exhaust and electrical system.
It's a shorter length but taller motor than GS
Here's the first mock up of the Katana engine.
Old lump out. wiring harness out, dropped the tubes about an inch and a half. I have to fab some hangers and cut the old top rear mount because it interferes with the clutch cover. That engine was HEAVY! I had the old exhaust leaning in a corner and a fair amount of oil dripped out. That old engine needed some work! May not get much more done this weekend. I am hanging Christmas decorations tomorrow!
