no seriously... half helm or full

surein

My Cougar
I think I just got my first bike (verbal sold) and I really wanted the half helm or 3/4 with goggles. Not that I will be able to ride on hwys yet but man forum advise is full face only.

thoughts?

Depends entirely on how much you value your life / facial features ?????????????

I'd rather skate down the road face down with a full helmet than an open face helmet relying on my nose, lips, cheeks, teeth to soak up the contact - know what I mean??

It's your head so wear what you like. I like my bottom jaw where it is, so I wear full face at all times, oh and I got a rock the size of a golfball in the face 2 days ago, replaced my visor, not my teeth, $20.00 versus a few thousand. Might have crashed badly too if I was just wearing a 3/4 cause it would have hurt like a bugger I am sure.

Cheers,

+1 , there's no better way than putting it like that

If you're getting your first bike, I would put all styling considerations aside for now and get a full coverage helmet. Even a very low speed tumble off a bike can do a surprising amount of damage to your jaw/face...

Just my opinion, but I am an EMT who has been on motorcycle accident calls, and have seen mandible injury to a rider when they were wearing half/ three-quarter helmets, that wouldn't have happened if they had a full coverage helmet

I'm good looking and smart, so I wear a modern full face (Shoei RF1100).

Go outside right now.

Put your face on the road in front of your house/office.

Crawl forward, with your face still pressed against the asphalt.

Now imagine that happening at 30x that speed.

Wear whatever you wish honestly. I know that I throw on my 3/4 every once and awhile. But when it comes to protection, dont let ANYONE tell you that anything short of a proper (not a cheap $40 off brand) full face helmet provides any real protection in a major (or even minor sometimes) accident.

I look cool wearing a 3/4. I look even cooler with a bottom jaw. I'm seriously good looking though. Totally.

Like most things, get the facts, understand the risks and make a decision. We're all big boys. I wear a full-face, armored gloves, jeans, and boots. I have not had an accident, but I feel adequately protected. I could save up and get armored pants, but I've weighed the risks and this is what I'm willing to accept.

I freaking hit a HUGE grass hopper yesterday at like 65-70 out on the highway. Smacked me right between my eyes, well it would have if I didn't have my helmet, scared the holey shit out of me anyway. Had to stop and clean dead bug guts off my visor because I couldn't see through them, I can barely imagine WTF it would have felt like hitting an eyeball. I know I prolly would have been blind in an eye or both long enough to wreck the bike. I hit a June bug last month right in the left nipple and it stung for hours.

A week ago, a DOVE came flying out of NO WHERE and about collided with my face. I ducked ;D and missed the bastard but again scared the shit out of me. I wear full face because I like to SEE and I want to keep my FACE in one piece. I swear it's not so much the crash I worry about most days, it's the frigging wildlife.

+1 on Von's advice, if that don't prove it nothing will. Damn concrete is hard and HOT enough to cook an egg right now.

so not even this.. ?

Nope :) I mean, that will save your brain, so at least you'll know what the mush they pump into your stomach through your wired jaw is made of ;)

Have a peek at the Nolan N43 and Schuberth J1. I like the J1 but haven't seen one in person. Good compromise between fullface and 3/4 helmets.

From someone who has had a broken jaw, and was wired shut for a month+... You want chin protection for sure. Especially when youre just learning to ride.
Not that a liquid diet, massive amounts of pain killers, losing 45lbs in a month, having to have someone check on you when youre asleep so you dont choke on your own saliva/vomit, several thousand dollars in medical bills, having to relearn to eat/speak, and a daily risk of severe infection isnt fun...
Oh, and if you think the part where your jaw shatters like glass wasnt enough awesome for one lifetime, wait till they remove the wires...
And its always a blast when its really cold out, and the metal plates holding your jaw together feel like ice in your face.

Just sayin...

Full face all the way.

Snell is the only rating system i go by on helmets. I won't buy a full face unless its snell because if they have stamped your helmet, its the best chance you've got.

Snell won't even test helmets that aren't full face, so i don't mess with anything but. Snell won't even test modular helmets, so even cop helmets don't carry snell approval. I went down on I-35 in Texas in February, and didn't even hit my head, but i had never been gladder to be wearing my helmet.

Wow. That nolan is NICE. I use both a full and 3/4 lid. Fullface for work commutes and backroads stuff. And 3/4 for in town riding. In the summer it gets to 100 degrees pretty quick on the road, and a fullface feels like im being cooked.
