what are legal requirements on a motorcycle, some say dont need tach or speedo, and its all or none with blinkers. others ive asked say you must have speedo but no tach... will there be a problem with yearly inspections without them??
thanks :-\

Depends on the year your bike was made and the state in which you register it.

Generally speaking, it's OK to run without a tach. Other stuff: If your bike came with it, it's probably required.

Really depends on your state. Not sure why you wouldn't run one though. Would make for an interesting pucker clinching effect when you get a cop behind you.....hmmmm...I wonder how fast I'm going? ;D

Here in Wyoming motorcycles are only required to have a headlight, tail lights, one mirror, insurance and license plates. Now that is to operate one. If you are using a motorcycle for your drivers license test then that bike requires headlight, tail lights, turn signals, 2 mirrors, muffler exhaust, insured, plated and 2 mirrors. Stark contrast eh?

Here in CA if the bike was manufactured before 1973 you don't need turn signals, but I'm pretty sure you need at least a speedo. I did the bare minimum on my bike so I looked through the CA vehicle regs. You may want to do the same in your state. Hope that helps!

In Michigan it's front and rear wheel brakes, headlight, taillight, stop-light, muffler, horn, rear-view mirror, and permanently attached seat.

FOUR MIRRORS?!?!?! Wyoming must have some sick looking bikes ;)

I don't know where you guys go for inspections but I feel like everyone knows a guy. I use this shop that sends out the chic from the front desk. Last time she came out smiled gave the tire a squeeze and slapped on the sticker. In and out in less than 10. I know it's a little shady but hey I didn't have mirrors, blinkers, muffler, or a front fender.

In Illinois you don't need helmets or turn signals. You need one mirror, headlight, and taillight. Not sure about speed or tach. But I don't have a tach and use a speedo app from android.

is it specifically pre-1973 for all time, or is it a sliding timeline as in how you don't have a smog a car that is 35 years or older?

I think most states require a speedo. But its the one thing that they don't check to see if it actuly works. At least I've never heard of an insection station that test rides. :)

So basicly any old clock that you can zip tie to the bars should pass.

If you want a working speedo on the cheap, try a bicycle speedo.
Heres mine;

Cost about $20 + time
You HAVE to use a wired model, no wireless. Jsut glue the magnet to the rim and fab up a little bracket that bolts on the fender mount.
