NooB from ohio

Insert sense of humor here---->
I figure I should introduce myself, since I'll be lurking about for a while collecting information and inspiration. I'm here in Central Ohio, weathering the awful cold spell we're in the middle of right now. I'm one of those guys who rode two wheels for fun and thrills as a kid. 25 years later I bought a used 1982 Suzuki GS 850, and saved it from a PO that had it in a barn leaking oil. Fresh rattlecan paint job, and a few assorted gaskets, bushings and cleaning, I have the bike below. I'm sorry that I have a shaftie, as I'm not officially qualified for either cafe or fighter. I am stubborn and will find a way to make this hulking beast into something worthy of fans of the cafe and/or streetfighter style. I think I've got work to do, and not much cash to make it on. I've got to figure out what to do with the picnic bench of a seat..... I'm planning on matte black at this point.... Any other GS'ers around here? This is a little outdated, but still pretty close to what I'm working with.... Look forward to reading alot and learning alot, too. Cheers.

Thanks punkrocker. I'm finding quite a bit of visual inspiration in all the picture threads. I'm torn as to which direction I should go right now. I'm finding that this site in particular has tons of great ideas, for either fighter or cafe. With the hulking mass that is the GS850, keeping proportion correct with the 6 gallon tank will be a challenge. I think that's why I'm trying to mod this beast, for the challenge. Some sort of bizarre blend of ratbike, cafe and fighter. I've already spent tons of hours just getting this thing cleaned to where it is now. PO had a catastrophic oil leak on his 1 hour ride home from work. Just let it leak, fixed the leak, but NEVER CLEANED IT UP!! I've been wiping, scrubbing, etc since I got it, and I'm STILL working on it.

Funny thing is, sometimes when you clean up an old bike, you find that there is another leak underneath where you just cleaned! ;D Found a couple of those, replaced numerous o-rings and gaskets and so far, everthing is holding together. Weeping at the base of the head, but I will be tackling that rebuild after some other things get done. Black exhaust wrap on the tired but functional headers, mufflers are still in great shape, so I'll be leaving them as is for now. Matte black paint on the tins, maybe a different front fender if I can find a cafe style or tracker style front fender. It's my daily driver above 40 degrees, so I'll need that fender. Pod filters and a rejet are coming soon.... I found carb work to be pretty fun. I'm weird like that. Balanced them myself, with a borrowed carb sync. Replaced the old worn out valve shims, that was a PITA. Accel coils, had to fab the brackets to make 'em fit, and new red Dyna wires with NGK caps. I'm really lucky that I've got two or 3 really awesome local sources for me to hit up if I've got parts needs or questions. Rice Paddy, a motorcycle junkyard, is full of wonderous parts and TONS of knowledge. It's best if you go there, you can spend lots of time wandering the lot looking at rolling wrecks, basket cases and cool odd parts. They are all riders of vintage bikes, including cafes. They have yet to NOT have something I've needed, and really helped me troubleshoot a faulty rectifier. Iron Pony Motorsports is on the other side of town from me. They are a motorcycle megastore, that sells mostly gear, but has a group of knowledgeable guys at the parts counter who don't try to upsell you. They now are a Yamaha dealer. Super prices on just about everything gear related. If you can't find a helmet here, you're just not looking. Well, that was a long reply, I think I'll stop here for now.

Yeah the GS850 is quite big. But you know what they say, the bigger the better. I bet ur bike wil make a fine cafe racer.
In any case, keep us updated, with lots of pictures.
I would like to learn a thing or two, cos i dont really get to ride the big bikes.
i just have a crappy 135cc bike, which i plan to make into a mini cafe. and like u, i get alot of ideas from this forum. not to mention enthusiasm.

haha, so good luck to ur GS project!
:)

Welcome! You have found a great place for all sorts of stuff (knowledge, pics, aprts, etc). Look at the pics and threads on here and you'll be able to come up with lots of ideas for stuff. Keep us updated.

I'm sorry that I have a shaftie,

Welcome, glad to see another Buckeye on board., and nothing wrong with shafties. Lots of Beemers have been converted to some very nice cafe bikes. I have a '79 R100RT that will make the transformation after a few other things are sorted out. Your already close to Mid-Ohio, if you haven't been to Vintage Days, plan on it. Lots of us will be there.

I contemplated on going to vintage days last year, but it was cost prohibitive at the time. Of course now that I know about it ahead of time, well.... I'm saving -up the caish. ;D So I've got one vote in the positive column on the shaft, which is good. I should include one picture of my bike, pre-silver paintjob, of my bike at work in its' parking spot.... heh heh.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist. This is my 'office'. I work for the athletic department, in electronics. From my garage at home, to covered parking at work. My bike gets babied.

I get what you mean with the leaks and all. My carb's leaking too, and also from alot of other places I cant seem to find. Lots of rusty parts I need to clean up. Even my frame and footpegs are crooked. I think the previous owner got into an accident. My battery's dead, so signals and lights aren't working. Disc brake is warped too. Even the tank cap leaks. But its okay. I paid less than $500 for this old bike, and i was expecting these kinds of damages.

Haha.. well i'm glad that you've really looked into what you wanna do with your bike, and already outsourced the different places to get your stuff. Anyway, thanks for recommending places like Rice Paddy and Iron Pony, but unfortunately, I won't ever be going there. I think. Well not anytime soon I guess.
I live on the other side of the world from you are and things over here aren't as heavenly as the U.S. The mods I can do with my bike is limited and subject to government approval, which sucks. I can't tinker with my exhausts, I can't swap engines, I can't do many things. It's so sad.

Plus, the stuff you guys can get there is alot compared to what I can get here. Cafe parts like clubman bars cannot be found here. I have to order them online. So troublesome, since I dont have a credit card or whatever to pay with. I would really love to get the DTT patch from here, but I guess I can't. haha.

All that aside, I guess the only thing good is that it's sunny all year round. We don't have winter. haha. So there's no waiting for months before i can start working on my bike. I just have to wait for money to fall from the sky.

Hey Joe, thanks for the link! I signed up. :) I live at Georgesville and 270, Grove City, with a Columbus address. Thankfully I have a Columbus address so officially I don't have to wear acid washed jeans and a mullet. ;D
