Noob ignition timing questions within.

Doing my first timing check and adjustment.

I took off the generator cover.
It says I need to have the engine running to check timing.
So I start it up and it starts spraying oil out of the open cover.
Is this normal? Should I be worried? Will it do it the whole time it's running?
I never actually started it up because I didn't want to get oil everywhere.
Sorry, this is probably a dumb question but I searched and didn't find anything.

Depends on the bike.

wouldnt think the timing and stator would be on the same side on any bike

if its a cb, put it on the center stand and place a 1/2 inch block under the left side to keep it tipped up slightly. unless its overfilled...not likely now that you have relieved it of some of its contents. the oil shouldnt come out at all.
In the event your one of those guys that have removed the center stand. get busy putting it back on.

Then you'd be wrong CB twins, for example, have timing marks on the stator.

When I check the timing on my 360, I lose about a quart of oil. Definitely normal, keep a drain pan handy.

Yeah, that's par for the course. As stated above, lean the bike to the other side a little bit, put a drain pan down, etc. If you have access to another stator cover (or can make a reasonable facsimile) you can cut a hole in it where the timing marks are and bolt it on when setting the timing.

Noted. Shit, I'm going to have to take my bike elsewhere to do this. If i do this in my parking garage my snooty neighbors will shit. I live in an apartment building and there's no working on cars/bikes allowed so I already have to do it at non-peak hours / take parts off and up to my apartment. Maybe I'll find an empty parking lot.
