ride it like you stole it
yo yo...for the folks in the know, what key things might i look closely at while investigating a 1970 Norton Commando 750?
i'm pretty green to the Brit bikes, but i think i'm as good as gold to have this in my hands tomorrow.
just not sure what, if any, special areas to look closely at.
all i know is that it was overhauled 2 yrs ago and has approx 1000 miles on it since.

anyone lend a brotha a hand?

thanks much in advance.

This might be a question you want to post on the VRRA site. www.vrra.ca A lot of Norton owners on that site.

don't recall mentioning any problems.
just asking about key areas to look at & ask about.
ie: atlas engine vs combat, etc. don't even know if it's the original engine in it (only that is has been rebuilt)....something i'm checking tomorrow.

I didn't mean that the way it came out. If it starts, sounds good and ride good then go for it. You're not buying a brand new bike so expect some little things. But its a Norton and parts are available from many sources. Go for it.

your first reply was not out of line...i woulda said the same thing.
and your second one is exactly whats going thru my mind already.
i'll know more tomorrow at about 7pm.

cheers

Hey Andrew, Go for it Dude!!!..
I dont know much about the brit bikes except that they leak from the factory, and, dont expect to go on a long ride without it breaking down...(thats just a historical expectation... When they rockers did the yearly pilgrimage from London to the Isle of Mann, it was expected that the bike would breakdown along the way...)

Send some pics!!

Cheers

damn, now that's some kinda response.
the info you've offered me is terrific. many thanks.
pints are on me!

I just got a '70 through a family member. I think the biggest issues are electrical, especially the starter. Check out coloradonortonworks.com. This guy completly goes through his bikes and gets rid of all the weak links...some good clues on that site.

Mine def. isn't a '70 then, I'm gonna have to find a reference for the vin #, bill of sale and prev reg say it's a 70 but that doesn't mean anything I guess!!

I was 1/2 right, bike is a 70 but the motor is 73 and it actually works kinda. It will spin but not fire the motor. If I give it a good kick, the headlight will come on, then hit the starter button and it starts. Probably just a weak battery...
